1. David consulted with the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, with every leader.
2. Then David said to the whole assembly of Israel, “If it seems good to you, and if it is from Yahweh our God, let us send word everywhere to our brothers who remain in all the regions of Israel, and with them to the priests and Levites in their towns with pasturelands, so that they may gather to us.
3. Then let us bring the ark of our God back to us, for we did not seek it in the days of Saul.”
4. The whole assembly said they would do so, for the proposal seemed right to all the people.
5. So David assembled all Israel, from the Shihor of Egypt to Lebo-hamath, to bring the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim.
6. David and all Israel went up to Baalah, that is, Kiriath-jearim, which belongs to Judah, to bring up from there the ark of God, Yahweh, who is enthroned on the cherubim, the ark that is called by his name.
7. They set the ark of God on a new cart and brought it from the house of Abinadab, and Uzzah and Ahio were driving the cart.
8. David and all Israel were celebrating before God with all their might, with songs, lyres, harps, tambourines, cymbals, and trumpets.
9. When they came to the threshing floor of Chidon, Uzzah reached out his hand to take hold of the ark, because the oxen stumbled.
10. Yahweh’s anger burned against Uzzah, and he struck him down because he had reached out his hand to the ark. He died there before God.
11. David was angry because Yahweh had broken out against Uzzah, and he called that place Perez-uzzah, as it is called to this day.
12. David was afraid of God that day and said, “How can I bring the ark of God to me?”
13. So David did not bring the ark to himself in the city of David, but took it aside to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.
14. The ark of God stayed with the household of Obed-edom in his house for three months, and Yahweh blessed the household of Obed-edom and everything he had.
