1. Then Samuel took the flask of oil and poured it on Saul’s head and kissed him and said, “Has not Yahweh anointed you as leader over his people Israel? You will rule over the people of Yahweh and save them from the power of their enemies all around. And this will be the sign to you that Yahweh has anointed you as leader over his inheritance:
2. When you leave me today, you will meet two men near Rachel’s tomb, in the territory of Benjamin at Zelzah. They will say to you, ‘The donkeys you went to look for have been found. Now your father has stopped thinking about the donkeys and is worried about you. He keeps asking, “What should I do about my son?”’
3. Then you will go on from there until you come to the oak of Tabor. Three men going up to worship God at Bethel will meet you there. One will be carrying three young goats, another three loaves of bread, and another a skin of wine.
4. They will greet you and give you two loaves of bread, which you are to accept from them.
5. After that you will come to Gibeah of God, where there is a Philistine garrison. As you come into the town, you will meet a band of prophets coming down from the high place with harps, tambourines, flutes, and lyres being played before them, and they will be prophesying.
6. Then the Spirit of Yahweh will rush upon you, and you will prophesy with them, and you will be changed into a different person.
7. When these signs have happened to you, do whatever your hand finds to do, for God is with you.
8. Then go down ahead of me to Gilgal. I will surely come down to you to offer burnt offerings and to sacrifice fellowship offerings. Wait seven days until I come to you and show you what you are to do.”
9. As Saul turned to leave Samuel, God gave him a different heart, and all these signs happened that day.
10. When they came to Gibeah, a band of prophets met him. The Spirit of God rushed upon him, and he prophesied among them.
11. When all who had known him before saw him prophesying with the prophets, the people said to one another, “What has happened to the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?”
12. A man who lived there answered, “And who is their father?” So it became a saying: “Is Saul also among the prophets?”
13. When Saul had finished prophesying, he went to the high place.
14. Saul’s uncle asked him and his servant, “Where have you been?” He said, “Looking for the donkeys. When we saw that they could not be found, we went to Samuel.”
15. Saul’s uncle said, “Please tell me what Samuel said to you.”
16. Saul told his uncle, “He assured us that the donkeys had been found.” But he did not tell him what Samuel had said about the kingship.
17. Samuel called the people together before Yahweh at Mizpah.
18. He said to the Israelites, “This is what Yahweh, the God of Israel, says: ‘I brought Israel up out of Egypt, and I rescued you from the power of the Egyptians and of all the kingdoms that oppressed you.’
19. But today you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your disasters and troubles. You have said to him, ‘No, set a king over us.’ So now present yourselves before Yahweh by your tribes and by your clans.”
20. When Samuel had all the tribes of Israel come forward, the tribe of Benjamin was chosen by lot.
21. Then he had the tribe of Benjamin come forward by its clans, and the clan of Matri was chosen. Finally Saul son of Kish was chosen. But when they looked for him, he could not be found.
22. So they inquired further of Yahweh, “Has the man come here yet?” And Yahweh said, “There he is, hiding among the baggage.”
23. They ran and brought him out from there. When he stood among the people, he was head and shoulders taller than any of them.
24. Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see the man Yahweh has chosen? There is no one like him among all the people.” Then all the people shouted, “Long live the king!”
25. Samuel explained to the people the rights and duties of the kingship. He wrote them in a scroll and placed it before Yahweh. Then Samuel sent all the people away, each to his own home.
26. Saul also went home to Gibeah, and with him went the valiant men whose hearts God had touched.
27. But some worthless men said, “How can this man save us?” They despised him and brought him no gift. But Saul kept silent.
