1. After the Philistines captured the ark of God, they brought it from Ebenezer to Ashdod.
2. Then the Philistines took the ark of God and brought it into the temple of Dagon and set it up beside Dagon.
3. When the people of Ashdod got up early the next morning, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of Yahweh. So they took Dagon and put him back in his place.
4. But when they got up early the following morning, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of Yahweh. His head and both his hands had been broken off and were lying on the threshold. Only his body was left.
5. That is why, to this day, neither the priests of Dagon nor anyone who enters Dagon’s temple in Ashdod steps on the threshold of Dagon.
6. The hand of Yahweh was heavy on the people of Ashdod. He brought devastation on them and struck them with tumors, both Ashdod and its territory.
7. When the men of Ashdod saw what was happening, they said, “The ark of the God of Israel must not stay with us, because his hand is hard on us and on Dagon our god.”
8. So they sent for all the rulers of the Philistines and gathered them together and asked, “What should we do with the ark of the God of Israel?” They answered, “Let the ark of the God of Israel be moved to Gath.” So they moved the ark of the God of Israel there.
9. But after they had moved it, the hand of Yahweh was against that city, throwing it into a great panic. He struck the people of the city, both young and old, and tumors broke out on them.
10. So they sent the ark of God to Ekron. As the ark of God was entering Ekron, the people of Ekron cried out, “They have brought the ark of the God of Israel around to us to kill us and our people!”
11. So they sent for all the rulers of the Philistines and gathered them together and said, “Send the ark of the God of Israel away. Let it go back to its own place, so that it will not kill us and our people.” For a deadly panic had spread through the whole city; the hand of God was very heavy there.
12. Those who did not die were struck with tumors, and the cry of the city went up to heaven.
