1. Now Elisha had said to the woman whose son he had brought back to life, “Get up and go with your household, and stay wherever you can, for Yahweh has called for a famine, and it will come on the land for seven years.”
2. So the woman got up and did as the man of God said. She went with her household and lived in the land of the Philistines for seven years.
3. At the end of the seven years, the woman came back from the land of the Philistines and went to appeal to the king for her house and her land.
4. The king was talking with Gehazi, the servant of the man of God, and saying, “Tell me all the great things Elisha has done.”
5. Just as Gehazi was telling the king how Elisha had brought the dead back to life, the woman whose son he had brought back to life came to appeal to the king for her house and her land. Gehazi said, “My lord the king, this is the woman, and this is her son whom Elisha brought back to life.”
6. When the king asked the woman, she told him about it. Then the king assigned an official to her and said, “Give back everything that belonged to her, along with all the income from her land from the day she left the country until now.”
7. Elisha came to Damascus while Ben-hadad king of Aram was sick. When the king was told, “The man of God has come here,”
8. he said to Hazael, “Take a gift with you and go to meet the man of God. Consult Yahweh through him and ask, ‘Will I recover from this illness?’”
9. So Hazael went to meet him, taking a gift with him: every kind of good thing from Damascus, forty camel loads. He came and stood before him and said, “Your son Ben-hadad king of Aram has sent me to you to ask, ‘Will I recover from this illness?’”
10. Elisha said to him, “Go and tell him, ‘You will certainly recover.’ But Yahweh has shown me that he will certainly die.”
11. He kept his gaze fixed on him until he was ashamed. Then the man of God wept.
12. Hazael said, “Why is my lord weeping?” He answered, “Because I know the harm you will do to the people of Israel. You will set their fortresses on fire, kill their young men with the sword, dash their little children to pieces, and rip open their pregnant women.”
13. Hazael said, “But what is your servant, a mere dog, that he should do such a great thing?” Elisha answered, “Yahweh has shown me that you will be king over Aram.”
14. Then Hazael left Elisha and went back to his master, who asked him, “What did Elisha say to you?” He answered, “He told me that you will certainly recover.”
15. But the next day he took a heavy cloth, dipped it in water, and spread it over the king’s face, and he died. Then Hazael became king in his place.
16. In the fifth year of Joram son of Ahab king of Israel, while Jehoshaphat was king of Judah, Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah began to reign.
17. He was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem.
18. He walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, as the house of Ahab had done, for a daughter of Ahab was his wife. He did what was evil in the sight of Yahweh.
19. Yet Yahweh was not willing to destroy Judah, for the sake of his servant David, since he had promised to give a lamp to him and his descendants forever.
20. In Jehoram’s days Edom rebelled against Judah’s rule and set up a king of their own.
21. So Joram crossed over to Zair with all his chariots. He got up at night and struck the Edomites who had surrounded him and their chariot commanders, but his army fled home to their tents.
22. So Edom has been in rebellion against Judah’s rule to this day. Libnah also rebelled at that same time.
23. As for the rest of the deeds of Joram and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
24. Joram rested with his ancestors and was buried with them in the city of David. His son Ahaziah became king in his place.
25. In the twelfth year of Joram son of Ahab king of Israel, Ahaziah son of Jehoram king of Judah began to reign.
26. Ahaziah was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned one year in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Athaliah, a granddaughter of Omri king of Israel.
27. He walked in the ways of the house of Ahab and did what was evil in the sight of Yahweh, as the house of Ahab had done, for he was related by marriage to the house of Ahab.
28. He went with Joram son of Ahab to war against Hazael king of Aram at Ramoth-gilead, and the Arameans wounded Joram.
29. So King Joram went back to Jezreel to recover from the wounds that the Arameans had given him at Ramah when he fought against Hazael king of Aram. Ahaziah son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to Jezreel to see Joram son of Ahab, because he was sick.
