1. Darius saw fit to place 120 satraps over the kingdom, who would be spread across the whole kingdom,
2. and above them three administrators, one of whom was Daniel. These satraps were to report to them, so that the king would not be harmed.
3. This Daniel kept outshining the administrators and the satraps, because there was a surpassing spirit in him, and the king intended to put him in charge of the entire kingdom.
4. So the administrators and the satraps went looking for grounds to accuse Daniel in matters of the kingdom, but they could find no grounds and no wrongdoing, since he was reliable; no negligence and no wrongdoing could be found in him.
5. These men then said, “We will not discover any grounds against this Daniel unless we discover something against him in the law of his God.”
6. These administrators and satraps then came crowding in to the king and said to him, “King Darius, live forever!
7. All the kingdom’s administrators, the prefects and satraps, the advisers and governors, have taken counsel together that the king should put a statute in force and make a ban binding: for thirty days, whoever asks anything of any god or person other than you, O king, will be thrown into the lions’ den.
8. So now, O king, put the ban in force and sign the document so that it cannot be altered, in keeping with the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be revoked.”
9. Accordingly, King Darius put his signature on the document and the ban.
10. Once Daniel knew the document had been signed, he went into his house. Its upper room had windows opening toward Jerusalem, and three times each day he would kneel down, pray, and give thanks before his God, exactly as he used to do before this.
11. Then these men came crowding in and found Daniel asking and begging for favor before his God.
12. So they came forward and spoke before the king about the king’s ban: “Did you not sign a ban that for thirty days, whoever asks anything of any god or person other than you, O king, will be thrown into the lions’ den?” The king replied, “The matter is settled, in keeping with the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be revoked.”
13. Then they said before the king, “Daniel, one of the exiled people of Judah, shows no regard for you, O king, or for the ban you signed. Three times a day he makes his request.”
14. As soon as the king heard this, it troubled him deeply. He set his heart on saving Daniel, and he kept striving until sunset to deliver him.
15. Then these men came crowding in to the king and said to him, “Understand, O king, that the Medes and Persians have a law that no ban or statute the king puts in force may be altered.”
16. The king gave the word, and Daniel was brought and hurled into the lions’ den. The king said to Daniel, “Your God, whom you serve continually—he will rescue you!”
17. A single stone was brought and set over the opening of the den. The king sealed it with his signet ring and with the rings of his nobles, so that nothing about Daniel’s situation could be altered.
18. The king then went off to his palace and passed the night without food; he had no entertainment brought in to him, and sleep would not come to him.
19. At daybreak, as soon as it was light, the king rose and went in a rush to the lions’ den.
20. As he drew near the den, he shouted to Daniel in a pained voice. The king said to Daniel, “Daniel, servant of the living God, was your God, whom you serve continually, able to rescue you from the lions?”
21. Then Daniel spoke to the king: “O king, live forever!
22. My God sent his angel, who closed the mouths of the lions, and they did me no harm, since I was found innocent in his presence; and before you as well, O king, I have committed no crime.”
23. The king was filled with joy and ordered Daniel to be brought up from the den. Daniel was brought up from the den, and no harm at all was found on him, because he had put his trust in his God.
24. Then on the king’s orders the men who had maliciously denounced Daniel were brought and thrown into the lions’ den, they and their children and their wives. They had not even reached the floor of the den before the lions seized them and smashed all their bones.
25. King Darius then wrote to all the peoples, nations, and people of every language living anywhere on earth: “May your peace abound!
26. I hereby give an order that throughout the whole realm of my kingdom, people are to quake and stand in awe before Daniel’s God. For he is the living God, and he remains forever; his kingdom is one that will not be ruined, and his rule will last to the end.
27. He sets free and he delivers; he works signs and marvels in the heavens and on the earth—he who has rescued Daniel from the grip of the lions.”
28. This Daniel thrived during Darius’s reign and during the reign of Cyrus the Persian.
