1. Then we turned and went up the road to Bashan, and Og king of Bashan came out against us, he and all his people, to fight at Edrei.
2. Yahweh said to me, ‘Do not be afraid of him, for I have handed him over to you, with all his people and his land. Do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon.’
3. So Yahweh our God handed over to us Og king of Bashan as well, with all his people. We struck him down until no survivor was left to him.
4. At that time we captured all his cities. There was not a town that we did not take from them—sixty cities, the whole region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan.
5. All these were cities fortified with high walls, gates, and bars, besides a great many unwalled villages.
6. We devoted them to destruction, as we had done to Sihon king of Heshbon, devoting every city to destruction—men, women, and little ones.
7. But all the livestock and the spoil of the cities we took as plunder for ourselves.
8. So at that time we took the land from the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, from the Arnon Valley to Mount Hermon
9. (the Sidonians call Hermon Sirion, and the Amorites call it Senir),
10. all the cities of the plateau, all Gilead, and all Bashan as far as Salecah and Edrei, cities of Og’s kingdom in Bashan.
11. (Only Og king of Bashan was left of the remnant of the Rephaim. His bed was a bed of iron. Is it not still in Rabbah of the Ammonites? It is nine cubits long and four cubits wide, by the standard cubit.)
12. Of the land that we took possession of at that time, I gave to the Reubenites and the Gadites the territory from Aroer, which is by the Arnon Valley, and half the hill country of Gilead with its cities.
13. The rest of Gilead and all Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh—the whole region of Argob. All that part of Bashan is called the land of the Rephaim.
14. Jair, a descendant of Manasseh, took the whole region of Argob as far as the border of the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and he named those places in Bashan after himself, Havvoth-jair, as they are called to this day.
15. To Machir I gave Gilead.
16. To the Reubenites and the Gadites I gave the territory from Gilead to the Arnon Valley, with the middle of the valley as the border, and as far as the Jabbok River, the border of the Ammonites,
17. and also the Arabah, with the Jordan as its border, from Chinnereth to the Sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, below the slopes of Pisgah on the east.
18. At that time I commanded you, ‘Yahweh your God has given you this land to take possession of. All your fighting men must cross over armed ahead of your fellow Israelites.
19. But your wives, your little ones, and your livestock—I know you have a great deal of livestock—may stay in the cities I have given you,
20. until Yahweh gives rest to your fellow Israelites as he has to you, and they too take possession of the land that Yahweh your God is giving them beyond the Jordan. Then each of you may return to the possession I have given you.’
21. At that time I commanded Joshua, ‘Your own eyes have seen everything that Yahweh your God has done to these two kings. Yahweh will do the same to all the kingdoms you are crossing over into.
22. Do not be afraid of them, for Yahweh your God himself is the one who fights for you.’
23. At that time I pleaded with Yahweh:
24. ‘Lord Yahweh, you have only begun to show your servant your greatness and your mighty hand. What god is there in heaven or on earth who can do deeds and mighty works like yours?
25. Please let me cross over and see the good land beyond the Jordan, that good hill country, and Lebanon.’
26. But Yahweh was angry with me because of you, and he would not listen to me. Yahweh said to me, ‘Enough! Do not speak to me about this matter again.
27. Go up to the top of Pisgah and look to the west, the north, the south, and the east. See it with your own eyes, for you will not cross this Jordan.
28. But commission Joshua, and encourage and strengthen him, for he will cross over ahead of this people, and he will lead them to inherit the land that you will see.’
29. So we stayed in the valley opposite Beth-peor.
