1. The word of Yahweh came to me:
2. “Son of man, confront Jerusalem with her abominations.
3. Say, ‘This is what Lord Yahweh says to Jerusalem: Your origins and your birth were in the land of the Canaanites. Your father was an Amorite, and your mother a Hittite.
4. As for your birth, on the day you were born your cord was not cut, you were not washed with water to cleanse you, you were not rubbed with salt, and you were not wrapped in cloths.
5. No eye looked on you with pity to do any of these things for you out of compassion. Instead, you were thrown out into the open field, for you were despised on the day you were born.
6. Then I passed by you and saw you kicking about in your blood, and I said to you as you lay in your blood, “Live!” Yes, I said to you as you lay in your blood, “Live!”
7. I made you flourish like a plant of the field. You grew up and became tall and arrived at the full beauty of womanhood. Your breasts were formed, and your hair had grown, yet you were naked and bare.
8. Then I passed by you and looked at you, and you had reached the age for love. So I spread the edge of my garment over you and covered your nakedness. I swore an oath to you and entered into a covenant with you, declares Lord Yahweh, and you became mine.
9. Then I bathed you with water, washed the blood off you, and anointed you with oil.
10. I clothed you with embroidered cloth, put sandals of fine leather on your feet, wrapped you in fine linen, and covered you with silk.
11. I adorned you with jewelry. I put bracelets on your wrists and a necklace around your neck.
12. I put a ring in your nose, earrings in your ears, and a beautiful crown on your head.
13. So you were adorned with gold and silver, and your clothing was of fine linen, silk, and embroidered cloth. You ate fine flour, honey, and oil. You became exceedingly beautiful and rose to be a queen.
14. Your fame spread among the nations because of your beauty, for it was perfect through the splendor I had given you, declares Lord Yahweh.
15. But you trusted in your beauty and played the prostitute because of your fame. You poured out your favors on anyone who passed by, and your beauty became his.
16. You took some of your garments and made colorful shrines for yourself, and on them you played the prostitute. Nothing like this has ever happened, or ever will.
17. You also took your beautiful jewelry made of my gold and my silver, which I had given you, and made for yourself male images, and you played the prostitute with them.
18. You took your embroidered garments and clothed them, and you set my oil and my incense before them.
19. Also my food that I gave you, the fine flour, oil, and honey that I fed you, you set before them as a soothing aroma. That is what happened, declares Lord Yahweh.
20. You took your sons and your daughters whom you had borne to me and sacrificed them to the images to be devoured. Was your prostitution not enough?
21. You slaughtered my children and gave them up, making them pass through the fire to the images.
22. In all your abominations and your prostitution, you did not remember the days of your youth, when you were naked and bare, kicking about in your blood.
23. After all your wickedness—woe, woe to you, declares Lord Yahweh—
24. you built yourself a mound and made yourself a lofty shrine in every square.
25. At the head of every street you built your lofty shrine and made your beauty an abomination. You spread your legs for anyone who passed by and multiplied your prostitution.
26. You played the prostitute with the Egyptians, your well-endowed neighbors, and multiplied your prostitution to provoke me to anger.
27. So I stretched out my hand against you and cut down your portion. I handed you over to the will of those who hate you, the daughters of the Philistines, who were ashamed of your lewd conduct.
28. You played the prostitute with the Assyrians too, because you were never satisfied. You played the prostitute with them, and still you were not satisfied.
29. Then you multiplied your prostitution with the land of merchants, Chaldea, and even with this you were not satisfied.
30. How sick your heart is, declares Lord Yahweh, that you do all these things, the deeds of a brazen prostitute!
31. When you built your mound at the head of every street and made your lofty shrine in every square, you were not like a prostitute, because you scorned payment.
32. You adulterous wife, who takes strangers instead of her husband!
33. All prostitutes receive gifts, but you gave your gifts to all your lovers. You bribed them to come to you from every side for your prostitution.
34. So in your prostitution you were the opposite of other women. No one chased after you to be your lover. You gave payment, and no payment was given to you. You were the opposite.
35. Therefore, you prostitute, hear the word of Yahweh!
36. This is what Lord Yahweh says: Because your lust was poured out and your nakedness exposed in your prostitution with your lovers and with all your detestable idols, and because of the blood of your children that you gave to them,
37. therefore I am about to gather all your lovers with whom you took pleasure, all those you loved along with all those you hated. I will gather them against you from every side and expose your nakedness to them, and they will see all your nakedness.
38. I will judge you as women who commit adultery and shed blood are judged, and I will bring on you the bloodshed of wrath and jealousy.
39. I will hand you over to them, and they will tear down your mound and demolish your lofty shrines. They will strip you of your clothes, take your beautiful jewelry, and leave you naked and bare.
40. They will bring up a mob against you. They will stone you and cut you to pieces with their swords.
41. They will burn down your houses and carry out judgments on you in the sight of many women. I will put a stop to your prostitution, and you will never again give payment.
42. Then I will satisfy my wrath on you, and my jealousy will turn away from you. I will be calm and no longer angry.
43. Because you did not remember the days of your youth, but enraged me with all these things, I in turn will bring your conduct down on your own head, declares Lord Yahweh. Did you not commit lewdness on top of all your abominations?
44. Everyone who quotes proverbs will quote this proverb about you: “Like mother, like daughter.”
45. You are the daughter of your mother, who despised her husband and her children. And you are the sister of your sisters, who despised their husbands and their children. Your mother was a Hittite and your father an Amorite.
46. Your older sister is Samaria, who lived with her daughters to the north of you, and your younger sister, who lived to the south of you, is Sodom with her daughters.
47. You not only walked in their ways and did their abominations, but in a very short time you became more corrupt than they were in all your ways.
48. As surely as I live, declares Lord Yahweh, your sister Sodom and her daughters never did what you and your daughters have done.
49. This was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had pride, plenty of food, and carefree ease, but she did not strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.
50. They were haughty and did abominable things before me, so I removed them when I saw it.
51. Samaria did not commit even half your sins. You have multiplied your abominations more than they did, and you have made your sisters look righteous by all the abominations you have committed.
52. You too must bear your disgrace, for you have given grounds for judging in favor of your sisters. Because your sins were more abominable than theirs, they are more righteous than you. So be ashamed, you too, and bear your disgrace, for you have made your sisters look righteous.
53. But I will restore their fortunes, the fortunes of Sodom and her daughters and the fortunes of Samaria and her daughters, and I will restore your fortunes along with theirs,
54. so that you may bear your disgrace and be ashamed of all you have done in comforting them.
55. Your sisters, Sodom and her daughters, will return to their former state, and Samaria and her daughters will return to their former state, and you and your daughters will return to your former state.
56. You would not even mention your sister Sodom in the day of your pride,
57. before your wickedness was exposed. Now you are scorned by the daughters of Aram and all her neighbors, and by the daughters of the Philistines, who despise you on every side.
58. You must bear the penalty of your lewdness and your abominations, declares Yahweh.
59. For this is what Lord Yahweh says: I will deal with you as you have done, you who have despised the oath by breaking the covenant.
60. Yet I will remember my covenant with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish an everlasting covenant with you.
61. Then you will remember your ways and be ashamed when you receive your sisters, both those older and those younger than you. I will give them to you as daughters, but not because of your covenant.
62. I will establish my covenant with you, and you will know that I am Yahweh,
63. so that you will remember and be ashamed, and never again open your mouth because of your disgrace, when I make atonement for you for all that you have done, declares Lord Yahweh.’”
