1. Joseph flung himself on his father’s face, weeping over him and kissing him.
2. Joseph instructed the physicians who served him to embalm his father, and the physicians embalmed Israel.
3. They spent forty days on it, since that is how long embalming takes, and the Egyptians wept for him for seventy days.
4. When the period of weeping for him had passed, Joseph spoke to Pharaoh’s household: “If I have found favor with you, please speak to Pharaoh on my behalf:
5. ‘My father had me take an oath, saying, “I am going to die. In my grave, which I dug for myself in the land of Canaan—there you must bury me.” So please let me now go up and bury my father, and afterward I will return.’”
6. Pharaoh replied, “Go up and bury your father, just as he had you swear to do.”
7. Joseph went up to bury his father, and with him went all of Pharaoh’s officials, the leading men of his household, and all the leading men of the land of Egypt,
8. along with Joseph’s entire household, his brothers, and his father’s household. They left behind in the land of Goshen only their little ones and their flocks and herds.
9. Chariots and riders went up with him too; the procession was very large.
10. Arriving at the threshing floor of Atad, across the Jordan, they held a loud and deeply bitter lament there, and Joseph mourned for his father for seven days.
11. The Canaanites living in the land saw the mourning at Atad’s threshing floor and said, “This is a heavy mourning for the Egyptians.” So the place across the Jordan was given the name Abel Mizraim.
12. Jacob’s sons carried out for him exactly what he had commanded them.
13. His sons brought him to the land of Canaan and laid him in the cave in the field of Machpelah, east of Mamre, the cave Abraham had purchased from Ephron the Hittite together with the field as his own burial site.
14. Once he had buried his father, Joseph went back to Egypt, he and his brothers and everyone who had gone up with him for his father’s burial.
15. Joseph’s brothers saw that their father had died, and they said, “Suppose Joseph bears a grudge against us and repays us in full for all the evil we did to him!”
16. They sent a message to Joseph: “Your father gave us a command before his death:
17. ‘Tell Joseph this: Please, I beg you, pardon your brothers’ offense and their sin, since they did evil to you.’ So now, please pardon the offense of the servants of your father’s God.” Joseph wept as they spoke to him.
18. His brothers also came themselves and fell down in front of him. “Look, we are your slaves,” they said.
19. Joseph answered them, “Do not be afraid. Do I take the place of God?
20. You devised evil against me, but God devised it for good, so that he might bring about what is happening today—keeping many people alive.
21. So now, do not be afraid. I myself will take care of you and your little ones.” He comforted them and spoke to their hearts.
22. Joseph and his father’s household lived on in Egypt, and Joseph lived to be 110 years old.
23. He lived to see Ephraim’s descendants to the third generation, and the sons of Machir, Manasseh’s son, were also born on Joseph’s knees.
24. Joseph told his brothers, “I am dying, but God will surely look after you and lead you up out of this land into the land he promised with an oath to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”
25. Joseph had the sons of Israel take an oath: “God will surely look after you, and when he does, you must bring my bones up from here.”
26. Joseph died when he was 110 years old. They embalmed him and laid him in a coffin in Egypt.
