1. In the seventh month, on the twenty-first day of the month, the word of Yahweh came through the prophet Haggai:
2. Speak to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people, and say,
3. “Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Does it not seem to you like nothing at all?
4. But now be strong, Zerubbabel, declares Yahweh. Be strong, Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land, declares Yahweh, and work, for I am with you, declares Yahweh of Armies,
5. according to the promise I made with you when you came out of Egypt. My Spirit remains among you. Do not be afraid.
6. For this is what Yahweh of Armies says: In just a little while I will once more shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land.
7. I will shake all the nations, and the treasures of all the nations will come in, and I will fill this house with glory, says Yahweh of Armies.
8. The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, declares Yahweh of Armies.
9. The glory of this latter house will be greater than that of the former, says Yahweh of Armies. And in this place I will grant peace, declares Yahweh of Armies.”
10. On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of Yahweh came to the prophet Haggai:
11. This is what Yahweh of Armies says: Ask the priests for a ruling on the law:
12. “If someone carries consecrated meat in the fold of his garment, and that fold touches bread or stew, wine or oil, or any other food, does it become holy?” The priests answered, “No.”
13. Then Haggai asked, “If someone who is unclean from touching a dead body touches any of these, does it become unclean?” The priests answered, “It does become unclean.”
14. Then Haggai said, “So it is with this people and with this nation before me, declares Yahweh, and so it is with everything they do with their hands. Whatever they offer there is unclean.
15. Now consider carefully from this day onward. Before one stone was laid on another in the temple of Yahweh,
16. whenever someone came to a heap of twenty measures, there were only ten; whenever someone came to the wine vat to draw fifty measures, there were only twenty.
17. I struck you and all the work of your hands with blight, mildew, and hail, yet you did not turn to me, declares Yahweh.
18. Consider carefully from this day onward, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, from the day the foundation of the temple of Yahweh was laid. Consider carefully:
19. Is there still seed left in the barn? Until now the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have not produced fruit. But from this day on I will bless you.”
20. The word of Yahweh came to Haggai a second time on the twenty-fourth day of the month:
21. Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, and say, “I am going to shake the heavens and the earth.
22. I will overturn the thrones of kingdoms and destroy the power of the kingdoms of the nations. I will overturn chariots and their riders; horses and their riders will fall, each by the sword of his brother.
23. On that day, declares Yahweh of Armies, I will take you, Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, my servant, declares Yahweh, and I will make you like a signet ring, for I have chosen you, declares Yahweh of Armies.”
