1. For every high priest is chosen from among human beings and appointed to act on their behalf in matters related to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.
2. He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and going astray, since he himself is subject to weakness.
3. Because of this he must offer sacrifices for his own sins as well as for those of the people.
4. No one takes this honor on himself; he must be called by God, just as Aaron was.
5. In the same way, Christ did not take on himself the glory of becoming high priest. It was given to him by the one who said to him, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father.”
6. As he also says in another place, “You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.”
7. During the days of his life in the flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and pleas, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.
8. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience from what he suffered.
9. And once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him,
10. having been designated by God a high priest in the order of Melchizedek.
11. We have much to say about this, and it is hard to explain, because you have become slow to understand.
12. For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of God’s word. You have come to need milk, not solid food.
13. For everyone who lives on milk is inexperienced in the message of righteousness, because he is an infant.
14. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant practice have trained their senses to distinguish good from evil.
