1. For look, the Lord, Yahweh of Armies, is about to take away from Jerusalem and from Judah both support and supply—every supply of bread and every supply of water,
2. the warrior and the soldier, the judge and the prophet, the diviner and the elder,
3. the captain of fifty and the dignitary, the counselor, the skilled craftsman, and the expert in charms.
4. I will make boys their officials, and mere children will rule over them.
5. The people will oppress one another, each person his fellow, each his neighbor. The young will be insolent toward the old, and the lowly toward the honored.
6. A man will take hold of his brother in his father’s house and say, “You have a cloak; you be our ruler, and take charge of this heap of ruins.”
7. On that day he will cry out, “I will not be a healer. In my house there is neither bread nor cloak. Do not make me ruler of the people.”
8. For Jerusalem has stumbled and Judah has fallen, because their words and their deeds are against Yahweh, defying his glorious gaze.
9. The look on their faces testifies against them; they parade their sin like Sodom and do not hide it. Woe to them! For they have brought disaster on themselves.
10. Tell the righteous that it will go well with them, for they will eat the fruit of their deeds.
11. Woe to the wicked! It will go badly with them, for what their hands have done will be done to them.
12. My people—a child oppresses them, and women rule over them. My people, your guides lead you astray and swallow up the road you travel.
13. Yahweh takes his place to argue his case; he stands to judge the peoples.
14. Yahweh enters into judgment with the elders and officials of his people: It is you who have devoured the vineyard; the plunder taken from the poor is in your houses.
15. What do you mean by crushing my people and grinding the faces of the poor? declares the Lord Yahweh of Armies.
16. Yahweh says: Because the daughters of Zion are haughty and walk with necks outstretched, flirting with their eyes, tripping along with mincing steps, jingling the bangles on their feet,
17. the Lord will strike the heads of the daughters of Zion with scabs, and Yahweh will strip them bare.
18. On that day the Lord will take away their finery: the anklets, the headbands, and the crescent necklaces;
19. the pendants, the bracelets, and the veils;
20. the headdresses, the ankle chains, the sashes, the perfume bottles, and the amulets;
21. the signet rings and the nose rings;
22. the festal robes, the mantles, the cloaks, and the purses;
23. the mirrors, the linen garments, the turbans, and the wraps.
24. Instead of perfume there will be a stench; instead of a sash, a rope; instead of well-set hair, baldness; instead of a fine robe, a wrapping of sackcloth; a brand instead of beauty.
25. Your men will fall by the sword, and your warriors in battle.
26. Her gates will lament and mourn; emptied, she will sit on the ground.
