Lumin’s own translation, drafted with AI from the Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek, checked verse by verse against them, and approved by Lumin. Brackets mark verses not found in the earliest manuscripts.

1. In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah and captured them.
2. Then the king of Assyria sent the Rabshakeh with a large army from Lachish to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem. He took his stand by the channel of the Upper Pool, on the road to the Launderer’s Field.
3. Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who was in charge of the palace, came out to him, along with Shebna the secretary and Joah son of Asaph, the recorder.
4. The Rabshakeh said to them, “Tell Hezekiah, ‘This is what the great king, the king of Assyria, says: What is this confidence that you are relying on?
5. I say that strategy and strength for war are mere words. Now, whom are you trusting, that you have rebelled against me?
6. Look, you are trusting in Egypt, that staff of splintered reed, which enters and pierces the hand of anyone who leans on it. That is what Pharaoh king of Egypt is to all who trust in him.
7. But if you tell me, “We trust in Yahweh our God,” is he not the one whose high places and altars Hezekiah has removed, telling Judah and Jerusalem, “You must worship before this altar”?
8. Now then, make a bargain with my master the king of Assyria. I will give you two thousand horses, if you can put riders on them.
9. How then can you drive back even one officer, the least of my master’s servants, when you rely on Egypt for chariots and horsemen?
10. Besides, have I come up against this land to destroy it without Yahweh? Yahweh himself said to me, “Go up against this land and destroy it.”’”
11. Then Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah said to the Rabshakeh, “Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it. Do not speak to us in the language of Judah within earshot of the people on the wall.”
12. But the Rabshakeh said, “Did my master send me to speak these words only to your master and to you, and not to the men sitting on the wall, who will have to eat their own dung and drink their own urine along with you?”
13. Then the Rabshakeh stood and called out in a loud voice in the language of Judah: “Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria!
14. This is what the king says: Do not let Hezekiah deceive you, for he cannot rescue you.
15. Do not let Hezekiah persuade you to trust in Yahweh by saying, ‘Yahweh will surely rescue us; this city will not be handed over to the king of Assyria.’
16. Do not listen to Hezekiah, for this is what the king of Assyria says: Make peace with me and come out to me. Then each of you will eat from his own vine and his own fig tree and drink water from his own cistern,
17. until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards.
18. Do not let Hezekiah mislead you by saying, ‘Yahweh will rescue us.’ Has any of the gods of the nations rescued his land from the hand of the king of Assyria?
19. Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Did they rescue Samaria from my hand?
20. Which of all the gods of these lands has rescued his land from my hand, that Yahweh should rescue Jerusalem from my hand?”
21. But they kept silent and did not answer him a word, for the king’s command was, “Do not answer him.”
22. Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who was in charge of the palace, Shebna the secretary, and Joah son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn and told him what the Rabshakeh had said.
