1. These are the words of the letter the prophet Jeremiah sent from Jerusalem to the elders who remained among the exiles, and to the priests, the prophets, and all the people Nebuchadnezzar had deported from Jerusalem to Babylon.
2. This took place after King Jeconiah, the queen mother, the court officials, the princes of Judah and Jerusalem, the artisans, and the smiths had gone out of Jerusalem.
3. He entrusted it to Elasah son of Shaphan and Gemariah son of Hilkiah, whom Zedekiah king of Judah was sending to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon in Babylon. It read:
4. “This is what Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, says to all the exiles I deported from Jerusalem to Babylon:
5. Build houses and make your home in them; plant gardens and eat their fruit.
6. Take wives and father sons and daughters. Get wives for your sons and give your daughters to husbands, so they can bear sons and daughters. Grow numerous there; do not dwindle.
7. Look after the peace of the city I have exiled you to, and pray to Yahweh for it, because when it has peace, you will have peace.
8. For this is what Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, says: Do not let your prophets and your diviners who live among you mislead you, and pay no attention to the dreams you get them to dream.
9. For what they prophesy to you in my name is false; I did not send them, declares Yahweh.
10. For this is what Yahweh says: When the seventy years for Babylon have run their course, I will come to you and keep my good promise to you by bringing you back to this place.
11. For I myself know the plans I have in mind for you, declares Yahweh—plans for peace and not for disaster, to give you a future and something to hope for.
12. You will call to me, you will come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.
13. You will look for me and you will find me, when you search for me with your whole heart.
14. I will let myself be found by you, declares Yahweh. I will turn your fortunes around and gather you out of every nation and every place where I have scattered you, declares Yahweh, and I will bring you home to the place from which I deported you.
15. Since you claim, ‘Yahweh has raised up prophets for us in Babylon,’
16. this is what Yahweh says about the king seated on David’s throne and about all the people living in this city—your relatives who did not go into exile with you—
17. this is what Yahweh of Armies says: See, I am letting loose the sword, famine, and plague on them, and I will make them like disgusting figs so bad no one can eat them.
18. I will chase after them with sword, famine, and plague and make them something that appalls all the kingdoms of the earth—a curse, a thing of horror, something to hiss at, and a disgrace among all the nations where I have scattered them—
19. because they have not heeded my words, declares Yahweh, which I kept sending to them, time after time, through my servants the prophets. And you did not listen, declares Yahweh.
20. As for you, all you exiles I sent away from Jerusalem to Babylon, hear the word of Yahweh.
21. This is what Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, says about Ahab son of Kolaiah and Zedekiah son of Maaseiah, who are prophesying falsehood to you in my name: See, I am about to give them into the power of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he will execute them while you watch.
22. All the exiles of Judah in Babylon will draw a curse from them: ‘May Yahweh treat you like Zedekiah and Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted over the fire!’
23. This is because they have done a disgraceful thing in Israel: they have committed adultery with the wives of their neighbors and have spoken false words in my name that I never commanded them. I am the one who knows it and bears witness, declares Yahweh.”
24. To Shemaiah the Nehelamite you are to say,
25. “This is what Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, says: You are the one who sent letters under your own name to all the people in Jerusalem, to the priest Zephaniah son of Maaseiah, and to all the priests, telling them,
26. ‘Yahweh has appointed you priest in place of the priest Jehoiada, to be overseer in Yahweh’s house over any lunatic who poses as a prophet, and to put him in the stocks and the iron collar.
27. Why, then, have you not reprimanded Jeremiah from Anathoth, who poses as a prophet among you?
28. That is why he has sent word to us in Babylon: “It will be a long time. Build houses and make your home in them; plant gardens and eat their fruit.”’”
29. The priest Zephaniah read this letter in the hearing of the prophet Jeremiah.
30. Then the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah:
31. “Send word to all the exiles: ‘This is what Yahweh says about Shemaiah the Nehelamite: Since Shemaiah has prophesied to you without my sending him and has led you to put your trust in falsehood,
32. therefore this is what Yahweh says: See, I will call Shemaiah the Nehelamite and his offspring to account. He will have no one left living among this people, and he will not see the good I am about to do for my people, declares Yahweh, for he has urged rebellion against Yahweh.’”
