1. This is the word that the prophet Jeremiah spoke to Baruch son of Neriah, when he wrote these words in a scroll at Jeremiah’s dictation in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah:
2. “This is what Yahweh, the God of Israel, says to you, Baruch:
3. You said, ‘Woe is me, for Yahweh has added grief to my pain! I am worn out with my groaning, and I find no rest.’
4. This is what you are to say to him: ‘This is what Yahweh says: What I have built I am tearing down, and what I have planted I am uprooting, and that means the whole land.
5. And you, are you seeking great things for yourself? Do not seek them. For I am about to bring disaster on all people, declares Yahweh, but wherever you go I will give you your life as your spoil of war.’”
