1. At that time, declares Yahweh, the bones of the kings of Judah, the bones of its officials, the bones of the priests, the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem will be brought out of their graves.
2. They will be spread out before the sun and the moon and all the host of heaven, which they have loved and served, which they have followed, consulted, and worshiped. They will not be gathered up or buried; they will be like dung lying on the ground.
3. Death will be preferred to life by all the remnant that remains of this evil family, in all the places where I have driven them, declares Yahweh of Armies.
4. You are to say to them: This is what Yahweh says: When people fall, do they not get up again? When someone turns away, does he not turn back?
5. Why then has this people, Jerusalem, turned away in endless unfaithfulness? They cling to deceit; they refuse to return.
6. I have listened closely, but they do not speak what is right. No one repents of his wickedness, saying, “What have I done?” Each of them turns to his own course like a horse charging into battle.
7. Even the stork in the sky knows her seasons, and the turtledove, the swift, and the crane keep the time of their coming. But my people do not know what Yahweh requires.
8. How can you say, “We are wise, and the law of Yahweh is with us”? But look, the lying pen of the scribes has turned it into a lie.
9. The wise will be put to shame; they will be dismayed and caught. They have rejected the word of Yahweh, so what wisdom do they have?
10. Therefore I will give their wives to others and their fields to new owners, for from the least to the greatest, everyone is greedy for unjust gain; from prophet to priest, everyone deals falsely.
11. They have treated the wound of the daughter of my people as if it were not serious, saying, “Peace, peace,” when there is no peace.
12. Were they ashamed when they did detestable things? No, they were not at all ashamed; they did not know how to blush. So they will fall among those who fall; at the time of their punishment they will stumble, says Yahweh.
13. I will surely sweep them away, declares Yahweh. There will be no grapes on the vine and no figs on the fig tree, and even the leaves will wither. What I gave them will pass away from them.
14. “Why are we sitting still? Gather together! Let us go into the fortified cities and perish there, for Yahweh our God has doomed us to perish and has given us poisoned water to drink, because we have sinned against Yahweh.
15. We hoped for peace, but no good came; for a time of healing, but there is only terror.”
16. The snorting of his horses is heard from Dan; at the sound of the neighing of his stallions the whole land quakes. They come and devour the land and everything in it, the city and those who live there.
17. For I am about to send snakes among you, vipers that cannot be charmed, and they will bite you, declares Yahweh.
18. My joy is gone; grief has come upon me; my heart is sick within me.
19. Listen! The cry of the daughter of my people from a land far away: “Is Yahweh not in Zion? Is her King not in her?” “Why have they provoked me to anger with their carved images, with their worthless foreign idols?”
20. “The harvest is past, the summer has ended, and we are not saved.”
21. Because the daughter of my people is shattered, I am shattered; I mourn, and horror has seized me.
22. Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then has the healing of the daughter of my people not come?
