1. Then Zophar the Naamathite answered:
2. “Should a flood of words go unanswered? Should a man full of talk be proved right?
3. Should your empty boasting silence people? When you mock, should no one put you to shame?
4. For you say, ‘My teaching is pure, and I am clean in your sight.’
5. But oh, that God would speak, that he would open his lips against you
6. and tell you the secrets of wisdom! For true wisdom has two sides. Know then that God is overlooking some of your iniquity.
7. Can you find out the deep things of God? Can you find out the limits of the Almighty?
8. They are higher than the heavens—what can you do? They are deeper than Sheol—what can you know?
9. Their measure is longer than the earth and wider than the sea.
10. If he passes through and imprisons someone and calls a court, who can stop him?
11. For he knows worthless people; when he sees iniquity, will he not take note of it?
12. But an empty-headed man will gain understanding when a wild donkey’s colt is born a human being.
13. If you set your heart right and spread out your hands to him,
14. if there is iniquity in your hand, put it far away, and do not let injustice live in your tents.
15. Then you will lift up your face without shame; you will stand firm and not be afraid.
16. You will forget your trouble; you will remember it like water that has flowed away.
17. Your life will rise brighter than noonday; its darkness will be like the morning.
18. You will feel secure, because there is hope; you will look around and rest in safety.
19. You will lie down, and no one will make you afraid; many will seek your favor.
20. But the eyes of the wicked will fail; there will be no escape for them, and their hope will be to breathe their last.”
