1. Can you pull in Leviathan with a fishhook or tie down its tongue with a rope?
2. Can you put a cord through its nose or pierce its jaw with a hook?
3. Will it plead with you again and again? Will it speak to you gently?
4. Will it make a covenant with you, for you to take it as your servant forever?
5. Will you play with it as with a bird, or put it on a leash for your young girls?
6. Will traders bargain over it? Will they divide it up among the merchants?
7. Can you fill its hide with harpoons or its head with fishing spears?
8. Lay your hand on it—remember the battle, and you will not do it again!
9. Look, the hope of capturing it is false; is not anyone laid low at the very sight of it?
10. No one is fierce enough to rouse it. Who then is able to stand before me?
11. Who has first given to me, that I should repay him? Everything under the whole heavens is mine.
12. I will not keep silent about its limbs, its mighty strength, and the grace of its form.
13. Who can strip off its outer garment? Who can come within its double bridle?
14. Who can open the doors of its face? Its teeth all around are terrifying.
15. Its pride is its rows of shields, shut up tight as with a seal,
16. each one so close to the next that no air can come between them.
17. They are joined to one another; they cling together and cannot be separated.
18. Its sneezing flashes out light; its eyes are like the eyelids of the dawn.
19. Flaming torches pour from its mouth; sparks of fire shoot out.
20. Smoke pours from its nostrils as from a boiling pot over burning reeds.
21. Its breath sets coals ablaze, and a flame comes out of its mouth.
22. Strength lodges in its neck, and terror dances before it.
23. The folds of its flesh are joined firmly together; they are set hard on it and cannot be moved.
24. Its heart is as hard as stone, as hard as a lower millstone.
25. When it rises up, the mighty are afraid; they are beside themselves at its thrashing.
26. A sword that reaches it has no effect, nor does a spear, a dart, or a javelin.
27. It regards iron as straw and bronze as rotten wood.
28. An arrow does not make it flee; sling stones turn to chaff for it.
29. Clubs are regarded as chaff; it laughs at the rattling of the javelin.
30. Its underside is like jagged potsherds; it spreads a trail in the mud like a threshing sledge.
31. It makes the depths boil like a pot; it makes the sea like a pot of ointment.
32. It leaves a shining wake behind it; one would think the deep had white hair.
33. Nothing on earth is its equal, a creature made without fear.
34. It looks down on everything that is haughty; it is king over all the proud beasts.”
