1. Then Jonah prayed to Yahweh his God from the belly of the fish.
2. He said, “In my distress I called to Yahweh, and he answered me. From the belly of Sheol I cried for help, and you heard my voice.
3. You hurled me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the current swirled around me; all your breakers and your waves swept over me.
4. Then I said, ‘I have been driven away from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.’
5. The waters closed in over me to take my life; the deep surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head.
6. I went down to the roots of the mountains; the earth with its bars closed behind me forever. But you brought my life up from the pit, Yahweh my God.
7. As my life was ebbing away, I remembered Yahweh, and my prayer came to you, into your holy temple.
8. Those who cling to worthless idols forsake their loyalty.
9. But I, with a voice of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to you; what I have vowed I will pay. Salvation belongs to Yahweh!”
10. Then Yahweh spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah out onto the dry land.
