1. After Moses the servant of Yahweh died, Yahweh spoke to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ aide,
2. “Moses my servant is dead. Now get up, you and all this people, and cross this Jordan into the land I am giving them, the people of Israel.
3. I have given you every place on which the sole of your foot treads, as I told Moses.
4. Your territory will run from the wilderness and this Lebanon to the great river, the river Euphrates—all the land of the Hittites—and on to the Great Sea toward the sunset.
5. No one will hold his ground against you as long as you live. Just as I was with Moses, I will be with you. I will not fail you or abandon you.
6. Be strong and courageous, for it is you who will bring this people into possession of the land I swore to their fathers I would give them.
7. Only be strong and very courageous, and take care to carry out the whole law that my servant Moses commanded you. Do not swerve from it to the right or the left, so that you will succeed wherever you go.
8. Let this book of the law never depart from your lips. Meditate on it day and night, so that you take care to act on everything written in it. That is when you will make your way prosper, and that is when you will succeed.
9. Did I not command you? Be strong and courageous! Do not be terrified or lose heart, because Yahweh your God is with you everywhere you go.”
10. Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people,
11. “Go throughout the camp and give the people this order: ‘Get provisions ready for yourselves, for three days from now you will cross this Jordan to go in and take over the land Yahweh your God is giving you to possess.’”
12. Then Joshua spoke to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh,
13. “Keep in mind the word that Moses the servant of Yahweh commanded you: ‘Yahweh your God is giving you rest, and he will give you this land.’
14. Your wives, your children, and your livestock are to stay in the land Moses gave you beyond the Jordan. But you are to cross over in battle formation ahead of your brothers, all the valiant warriors among you, and help them,
15. until Yahweh grants your brothers rest as he has granted you, and they too possess the land Yahweh your God is giving them. After that you may go back to the land that belongs to you and take possession of it, the land Moses the servant of Yahweh gave you beyond the Jordan, toward the sunrise.”
16. They answered Joshua, “We will do all you have commanded us, and we will go anywhere you send us.
17. We will obey you in everything, just as we obeyed Moses. Only, may Yahweh your God be with you the way he was with Moses.
18. Anyone who defies your orders and will not listen to your words in all that you command him is to be put to death. Only be strong and courageous.”
