1. After these things the Lord designated seventy-two more and sent them in pairs ahead of him to every town and place he himself intended to visit.
2. He told them, “The harvest is large, but there are few workers. So plead with the Lord of the harvest to send workers out into his harvest.
3. Go on your way. See, I am sending you out like lambs surrounded by wolves.
4. Take along no money pouch, no pack, no sandals, and exchange greetings with no one along the road.
5. Whenever you go into a house, begin by saying, ‘Peace to this household.’
6. If someone there is a child of peace, your peace will settle on that person; if not, it will turn back to you.
7. Stay in that house, eating and drinking what they offer, since a worker is worthy of his pay. Do not keep moving from one house to another.
8. When you go into any town and the people receive you, eat the food they serve you.
9. Heal the sick people in that town and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God has drawn near to you.’
10. But when you go into a town where they do not receive you, go out into its open streets and declare,
11. ‘We are wiping off against you even the dust from your town that has stuck to our feet. But be sure of this: the kingdom of God has drawn near.’
12. I tell you, on that day things will be more tolerable for Sodom than for that town.
13. Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the powerful deeds done among you had taken place in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have sat in sackcloth and ashes and repented.
14. But at the judgment things will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon than for you.
15. And you, Capernaum—will you be raised as high as heaven? No, you will go down as far as Hades.
16. Anyone who listens to you is listening to me, and anyone who rejects you is rejecting me; and anyone who rejects me is rejecting the one who sent me.”
17. The seventy-two came back full of joy and said, “Lord, even the demons obey us in your name!”
18. He told them, “I was watching Satan fall out of heaven like a flash of lightning.
19. Look, I have given you the authority to step on snakes and scorpions and over the whole strength of the enemy, and nothing at all will hurt you.
20. Still, do not be glad about this, that the spirits obey you; be glad instead that your names have been recorded in heaven.”
21. At that very hour Jesus was overjoyed in the Holy Spirit and said, “I give you thanks, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for hiding these things from the wise and discerning and revealing them to little children. Yes, Father, because this was your good pleasure.
22. My Father has handed everything over to me. No one knows who the Son is but the Father, and no one knows who the Father is but the Son and those to whom the Son decides to reveal him.”
23. Turning to the disciples, he told them in private, “Blessed are the eyes that are seeing what you see.
24. For I tell you, many prophets and kings longed to see the things you are seeing, and they did not see them, and to hear the things you are hearing, and they did not hear them.”
25. Then a certain expert in the law stood up, aiming to test him. “Teacher,” he said, “what should I do to inherit eternal life?”
26. Jesus asked him, “What is written in the law? What is your reading of it?”
27. He answered, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and love your neighbor as yourself.”
28. Jesus told him, “Your answer is right. Keep doing this, and you will live.”
29. But because he wanted to justify himself, he asked Jesus, “And just who is my neighbor?”
30. Jesus took up the question and said, “A certain man was on his way down from Jerusalem to Jericho when he ran into bandits. They stripped him and rained blows on him, then went off and left him half dead.
31. As it happened, a priest was traveling down that same road, and when he saw him, he went past on the opposite side.
32. A Levite did the same: he came to the spot, and when he saw him, he went past on the opposite side.
33. But a Samaritan on a journey came upon him, and when he saw him, his heart went out to him.
34. He came over to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them. Then he lifted him onto his own animal, took him to an inn, and looked after him.
35. The following day he took out two denarii and handed them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and whatever extra you spend, I will pay you back on my return.’
36. In your view, which of these three turned out to be a neighbor to the man who ran into the bandits?”
37. He answered, “The one who treated him with mercy.” Jesus told him, “Go, and you yourself do the same.”
38. While they were traveling, he came into a certain village, and a woman named Martha received him as her guest.
39. She had a sister named Mary, who seated herself at the Lord’s feet and kept listening to his words.
40. Martha, meanwhile, was pulled in every direction by the many tasks of serving. She came over and said, “Lord, does it not matter to you that my sister has left me alone to do the serving? So tell her to lend me a hand.”
41. The Lord replied to her, “Martha, Martha, you are fretting and stirred up over many things,
42. but just one thing is needed, for Mary has chosen the good share, which will not be taken from her.”
