1. After the plague, Yahweh said to Moses and to Eleazar son of Aaron the priest,
2. “Take a census of the whole congregation of the Israelites, those twenty years old and upward, by their ancestral houses, everyone in Israel who is able to go to war.”
3. So Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them in the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho and said,
4. “Count those twenty years old and upward,” as Yahweh had commanded Moses. These were the Israelites who came out of the land of Egypt:
5. Reuben, Israel’s firstborn. The descendants of Reuben: from Hanoch, the clan of the Hanochites; from Pallu, the clan of the Palluites;
6. from Hezron, the clan of the Hezronites; from Carmi, the clan of the Carmites.
7. These were the clans of the Reubenites; those registered numbered 43,730.
8. The son of Pallu was Eliab,
9. and the sons of Eliab were Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram. These are the same Dathan and Abiram, men chosen from the congregation, who fought against Moses and Aaron as part of Korah’s company when they fought against Yahweh.
10. The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them along with Korah when that company died, when the fire consumed 250 men. They became a warning sign.
11. The sons of Korah, however, did not die.

52. Yahweh said to Moses,
53. “The land is to be divided among these as an inheritance according to the number of names.
54. To a larger group you are to give a larger inheritance, and to a smaller group a smaller inheritance. Each group is to be given its inheritance according to the number of those registered in it.
55. But the land is to be divided by lot. They are to receive their inheritance according to the names of their ancestral tribes.
56. Each inheritance is to be divided by lot between the larger and the smaller groups.”
57. These were the Levites registered by their clans: from Gershon, the clan of the Gershonites; from Kohath, the clan of the Kohathites; from Merari, the clan of the Merarites.
58. These were the clans of Levi: the clan of the Libnites, the clan of the Hebronites, the clan of the Mahlites, the clan of the Mushites, and the clan of the Korahites. Kohath was the father of Amram.
59. The name of Amram’s wife was Jochebed, the daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt. She bore to Amram Aaron and Moses and their sister Miriam.
60. To Aaron were born Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.
61. But Nadab and Abihu died when they offered unauthorized fire before Yahweh.
62. Those registered among the Levites numbered twenty-three thousand, every male one month old and upward. They were not registered among the Israelites, because no inheritance was given to them among the Israelites.
63. These were the ones registered by Moses and Eleazar the priest when they registered the Israelites in the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho.
64. Among them there was not one man of those registered by Moses and Aaron the priest when they registered the Israelites in the wilderness of Sinai.
65. For Yahweh had said of them that they would surely die in the wilderness. Not one of them was left except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
