1. Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, because the first heaven and the first earth had gone away, and the sea exists no longer.
2. I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, made ready like a bride dressed in beauty for her husband.
3. Then I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “See, the tent of God is with humanity, and he will pitch his tent among them. They will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them, their God.
4. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will not exist any longer, and neither will grief or crying or pain, because the former things have gone away.”
5. The one sitting on the throne said, “See, I am making everything new!” He also said, “Write it down, because these words are reliable and true.”
6. He said to me, “It has all taken place! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give to the thirsty from the spring of the water of life, as a free gift.
7. The one who conquers will receive these things as an inheritance; I will be God to him, and he will be a son to me.
8. But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice sorcery, idol worshipers, and all who lie will have their share in the lake burning with fire and sulfur. That is the second death.”
9. One of the seven angels who held the seven bowls filled with the seven final plagues came and talked with me. “Come here,” he said, “and I will show you the bride, the Lamb’s wife.”
10. In the Spirit he took me away to a huge, lofty mountain and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God.
11. It had the glory of God, and its brilliance resembled a stone of the highest value, a jasper stone sparkling like crystal.
12. It had a massive, towering wall with twelve gates, and twelve angels were stationed at the gates. Names were written on the gates: the names of the twelve tribes of the Israelites.
13. There were three gates on the east, three gates on the north, three gates on the south, and three gates on the west.
14. The city’s wall had twelve foundations, bearing the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
15. The one talking with me held a gold measuring rod so he could measure the city, its gates, and its wall.
16. The city is square, as long as it is wide. With the rod he measured the city at twelve thousand stadia; its length, width, and height are all the same.
17. He measured its wall too: 144 cubits by human reckoning, which is also the reckoning of an angel.
18. The material of the wall was jasper, and the city was of pure gold resembling clear glass.
19. Every kind of precious stone decorated the foundations of the city wall. The first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald,
20. the fifth sardonyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst.
21. The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each gate formed from one pearl. And the city’s street was pure gold, like glass you can see through.
22. I did not see a temple in the city, for the Lord God the Almighty is its temple, and so is the Lamb.
23. Neither sun nor moon is needed to shine on the city, for God’s glory has lit it up, and its lamp is the Lamb.
24. The nations will walk in the light it gives, and the kings of the earth are bringing their glory into it.
25. Its gates will never be closed in the daytime, because there will be no night there.
26. People will carry the glory and honor of the nations into it.
27. Nothing impure will ever come into it, and no one who practices what is vile or deceitful, but only those recorded in the Lamb’s book of life.
