The Antichrist, the end times, and artificial intelligence

Is AI the Antichrist?

No, AI is not the Antichrist. In John’s letters, where the word appears, antichrist means denying that Jesus is the Christ, and John says many antichrists had already come in his day. Paul’s “man of lawlessness” in 2 Thessalonians is a person who exalts himself as God and is destroyed by the Lord Jesus at his coming. AI is neither. It is software that generates text, images, and sound from patterns in data, with no self to exalt and no faith to deny. Could a future deceiver use AI? Scripture does not say. Jesus’ instruction has not changed: watch that no one deceives you, and do not be alarmed.

John’s test is older than any machine: what does it say about Jesus?

The direct answer

Is AI the Antichrist?

What the Bible calls antichrist. Denying that Jesus is the Christ come in the flesh. John says many antichrists had already come. Many Christians link this with Paul’s man of lawlessness, a person the Lord Jesus destroys.

What it does not say. That the Antichrist is a machine, an app, or a company, or which living person it will be. Those are guesses laid over the text.

The answer in under a minute.

The question, the short answer, and the Scripture to test it against. Every verse on screen is quoted from the Lumin Translation as it read when the film was made (edition 1.0); the linked passages show the current text.

Read what’s on screen
  1. The question Is AI the Antichrist? On screen, alarmed posts pile up: “AI is the Antichrist,” “Is the Antichrist already here?” “7 signs the beast is already online.”
  2. The short answer No. Look up the word. A Bible concordance finds it in four verses, all in John’s letters. Not one is in Revelation.
  3. Antichrist means denying Jesus. The concordance entry for 1 John 2:22 is underlined, with a pencil note: “It tests confession, not technology.” “Who is the liar if not the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This one is the antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the Son.” 1 John 2:22
  4. The man of lawlessness is a person. The pages turn to “lawlessness,” where 2 Thessalonians 2:3, “the man of lawlessness,” is underlined, with a note: “Software has no self to exalt.” “The one who opposes and exalts himself above everything called God or worshiped…” 2 Thessalonians 2:4
  5. Watch, and do not be alarmed. The pages turn to “alarmed” while new alerts pop up, then fade and slide away. “You will hear about wars and reports of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for they must occur, but the end is not yet.” Matthew 24:6
  6. Test the claim. Don’t fear the headline. The headlines turn over to the passages: 1 John 2:22, 2 Thessalonians 2:4, Matthew 24:6. “You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because greater is the one in you than the one in the world.” 1 John 4:4

Is AI the mark of the beast?

Where the word comes from

The word antichrist comes from John’s letters, not Revelation.

1 John 2:18 in the Lumin Translation: “Children, it is the last hour. Just as you heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. This is how we know that it is the last hour.” The word appears in only four verses, all in John’s letters. John does not deny that an antichrist is coming, but he ties the word to one mark: denying who Jesus is. 1 John 2:22 calls the antichrist “the one who denies the Father and the Son.” 1 John 4:3 and 2 John 1:7 say the same of those who will not confess Jesus Christ come in the flesh. John was writing about real people who had left the church, not about a machine.

Paul never uses the word, but many Christians connect it with the “man of lawlessness” in 2 Thessalonians 2, a person who takes his seat in the temple of God, “proclaiming himself to be God.” Paul wrote to a church shaken by claims that the day of the Lord had already come, and he tells them how the story ends. 2 Thessalonians 2:8 in the Lumin Translation: “And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will kill with the breath of his mouth and bring to nothing by the appearance of his coming.”

The question is in the news. In a Christian podcast interview reported in early September 2026, Vice President JD Vance talked about the end times, the Antichrist, and AI. Investor Peter Thiel has lectured that the Antichrist could come as a global government that gains control by exploiting fears about AI, climate change, or nuclear war. Whatever you make of either, the place to test the question is the text.

What Scripture says

A confession test, a person, and a promise.

These passages define the words behind the question. Read them slowly, and the fear gets smaller.

  1. 1 John 2:22

    Antichrist means denying Jesus.

John defines the word himself: denying that Jesus is the Christ, and so denying the Father and the Son. It tests confession, not technology.

  2. 1 John 4:1-3

Test what you hear about Jesus.

Examine what any voice confesses about Jesus come in the flesh, including a chatbot’s answer. Failing that test does not make a tool the Antichrist.

  3. 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4

Paul describes a person who claims to be God.

He is revealed, opposes God, and sits in God’s temple as if he were God. Software has no self to exalt.

  4. 2 Thessalonians 2:9-10

The defense is loving the truth.

The lawless one deceives with false signs, and those who perish did not accept the love of the truth. The protection is loving the truth, not decoding gadgets.

  5. 2 Thessalonians 2:8

    His end is already written.

The Lord Jesus destroys the lawless one with the breath of his mouth. Paul wrote it to give hope, not dread.

  6. Matthew 24:4-6

Watch, and do not be alarmed.

Jesus warned against deception and said not to be alarmed, for the end is not yet. Only the Father knows the day and hour (Matthew 24:36).

Real situations

Test the claim, not the headline.

The question shows up in videos, group chats, and late-night worry. Here is how to answer it.

A video says ChatGPT or AI is the Antichrist

Read 1 John 2 yourself

John defines antichrist as denying the Father and the Son. A program is not that. Does the video send you to Scripture, or to more videos?

Someone names a famous person alive today as the Antichrist

Do not join in

Naming a living person is a guess the text does not support, and it risks false witness (Exodus 20:16). Pray for them instead (1 Timothy 2:1-2).

A chatbot tells you Jesus was only a good teacher, or never lived

Test it against the Gospels

That claim fails John’s test (1 John 4:2-3), whatever says it. A chatbot echoes what people have written. Let Jesus answer for himself.

You worry that using AI means you are serving the Antichrist

Use it honestly, not fearfully

Using a tool is not worship or allegiance. Keep it in its place. If you fear you have taken the mark, see the mark of the beast page below.

AI is used to deceive with fake videos, voices, or wonders

Take it seriously

Paul warns of deception by false signs (2 Thessalonians 2:9-10). Be slow to believe dramatic clips and check the source. That is wisdom, not a date.

End-times news keeps you up at night

Be watchful, not afraid

Paul told an anxious church not to be quickly shaken (2 Thessalonians 2:2). Pray, read, limit the feed, and talk with your pastor.

Where Christians differ

Four ways Christians read these passages.

Futurists, including many premillennial Protestants, expect a single deceiver just before Christ returns, and Catholic and Orthodox teaching also expects a final deception before he comes. Historicists trace these prophecies through church history. Preterists see much of them fulfilled in the first century, often around Nero and the fall of Jerusalem in AD 70. Idealists, including many amillennial Christians, see the spirit of antichrist in every age, often coming to a head in a final figure. Faithful believers hold each view and agree on the ending: the lawless one falls, and Christ reigns. None of these readings needs AI to make sense of the text. The other end-times questions about AI each have their own page.

Common questions

Plain answers, without invented certainty.

Is AI the Antichrist?

No. In John’s letters, antichrist means denying that Jesus is the Christ. Paul’s man of lawlessness is a person who exalts himself as God. AI is software that generates text, images, and sound. It is neither.

Is ChatGPT the Antichrist?

No. ChatGPT is a chatbot made by the company OpenAI. It can say true or false things about Jesus, so test what it says. It is not the figure John or Paul describes.

Could AI be the Antichrist in the future?

Nothing in the text points that way. Paul describes a person who is revealed, sets himself up as God, and is destroyed by Christ. Guessing past the text claims a certainty God did not give.

Will the Antichrist use AI as a tool?

Scripture does not say. The lawless one deceives with false signs and wonders, and deception can use any tool. Misuse by some does not make the tool itself evil. The defense Paul names is loving the truth.

Is AI the man of lawlessness?

No. In 2 Thessalonians 2 the man of lawlessness is a person who opposes God, sits in God’s temple as if he were God, and is destroyed by the Lord Jesus. Christians differ on who and when, but none of the historic readings makes him a machine.

What does the Bible say about the Antichrist?

The word appears only in 1 John 2:18, 2:22, 4:3, and 2 John 1:7. John says antichrist is coming, that many antichrists had already come, and that antichrist denies the Father and the Son. Many Christians link this with Paul’s man of lawlessness.

Is a famous person alive today the Antichrist?

Scripture does not tell us, and Lumin will not name any living person as the Antichrist. For centuries Christians gave the title to emperors, church leaders, conquerors, and dictators, and each of them died without the end arriving. Scripture forbids false witness against a neighbor (Exodus 20:16).

How should Christians respond to Antichrist fears?

Watch that no one deceives you, do not be alarmed, and stay alert, since only the Father knows the day or hour (Matthew 24:4-6, 24:36; Mark 13:32-33). Paul adds: stay vigilant and sober (1 Thessalonians 5:6).

Is Lumin a prophecy app?

No. Lumin is a Bible companion that answers with Scripture you can open. It does not decode prophecy, set dates, or name anyone as the Antichrist, and it points you back to your church.
