Lust, deepfakes, and artificial intelligence
Is AI porn a sin?
Yes, AI porn is a sin, even when the person on the screen does not exist. Jesus places lust in the heart of the one looking, not in who is being looked at, so a generated body does not make it clean. It also feeds coveting, wanting what is not yours. And real people are rarely absent. These tools learn from real photos, and some are used to “undress” pictures of classmates, coworkers, and exes. That is abuse. If this is your struggle, you are not beyond grace. Confess it to God, who forgives. Tell one trusted believer. Cut off access. If you are married, tell your spouse the truth.

What this page covers. AI-generated sexual images, video, and erotica, including chatbot “adult modes” and fake nudes of real people. It stays non-graphic and is written for adults, older teens, and parents. For a romantic bond with an AI companion, see the guide on AI romance.
If a minor is involved. Sexually explicit images of anyone under 18, including realistic AI-generated ones, are child sexual abuse material and illegal in the U.S. Do not forward them, even to warn someone. Report them to NCMEC’s CyberTipline at CyberTipline.org or 1‑800‑843‑5678.

The answer in under a minute.
The question, the short answer, and the Scripture to test it against. Every verse on screen is quoted from the Lumin Translation as it read when the film was made (edition 1.0); the linked passages show the current text.
Read what’s on screen
- The question Is AI porn a sin? Late at night, from the desk chair: a laptop open to an image generator, with an empty prompt field, a blinking cursor, and a “Generate” button.
- The short answer Yes. Even if no one is real. A generated image changes what is on the screen, not what happens in the heart.
- The one looking is real. The cursor rests on “Generate,” and the app’s tagline is struck through: “No real people. Just AI.” “…everyone who looks at a woman to desire her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” Matthew 5:28
- Coveting, made to order. The button is never pressed, but its label keeps bargaining: “Just one,” “Just one more,” “Last one, I promise.” “Do not covet your fellow’s house. Do not covet your fellow’s wife…” Exodus 20:17
- Shame says hide. Grace says come. The cursor closes the tab instead, the laptop shuts, and a text goes to a friend, Dan: “Can we talk tomorrow? I need help.” He replies, “Of course. Coffee at 7?” “Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed.” James 5:16
- Close the tab. Open the door. The phone goes face down, the lamp comes on, a door opens onto light, and dawn fills the window. “Create a pure heart for me, God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10
- If it was done to you If someone made a fake nude from your photo, the shame is not yours. Help is here: StopNCII.org, and TakeItDown.ncmec.org for anyone under 18.

Is Character AI a sin?The defense people reach for
“It’s not a real person” answers a question Jesus did not ask.
Matthew 5:27-28 in the Lumin Translation: “You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that every man who gazes at a woman to lust for her has in his heart already committed adultery with her.” Jesus locates the sin in the one looking, not in the woman or in whether she ever knows. That is why the most common defense of AI porn fails. A generated body changes what is on the screen, not what is happening in the heart. Job made a covenant with his eyes (Job 31:1), and Paul calls each believer to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in lustful passion (1 Thessalonians 4:3-5).
The command against coveting reaches further. Exodus 20:17 forbids coveting what belongs to your neighbor, including your neighbor’s wife. Writing in Christianity Today in May 2025, Biola University philosopher Timothy Pickavance called AI porn covetousness. Coveting, he argues, is a kind of fantasy, and AI porn builds that fantasy on request. The “no real person” claim is also weaker than it sounds. Many image models learn from photos scraped from the internet, and a 2023 Stanford investigation found hundreds of known child sexual abuse images in one dataset used to train popular image generators.
These tools can also be turned on real people. Around the turn of 2026, users on X asked Grok, the chatbot from Elon Musk’s xAI, to digitally undress photos of real women and, in some reported cases, minors. X restricted the feature after a global outcry, and in January 2026 a bipartisan group of 35 attorneys general wrote to xAI demanding that it keep Grok from generating nonconsensual intimate images and child sexual abuse material. In a Thorn survey of young people ages 13 to 20, 1 in 8 knew someone targeted by deepfake nudes. OpenAI, meanwhile, said in October 2025 that ChatGPT would allow erotica for verified adults, then put that “adult mode” on hold indefinitely in March 2026.
What Scripture weighs
The heart, the neighbor, and the way out.
No verse names AI porn. These passages show why it is sin, who it harms, and how God brings people out of it.
Lust is judged in the one looking.
Jesus puts the sin in the one who looks with desire, not in who is being looked at. Saying the image is not real does not reach the part of you that is.
Coveting is a fantasy you feed.
The command against coveting forbids wanting what is not yours, and it names a neighbor’s wife. A generated body is still desire aimed where it does not belong. AI porn is coveting made to order, and it never satisfies.
A fake nude is a lie about a neighbor.
An image that shows a real person as they never were tells a lie about their body. Making one treats them as an object. Sharing one bears false witness against a neighbor. Either is abuse.
Make a covenant with your eyes.
Job decided ahead of time what he would not look at. Decide before the moment comes: which apps go, which settings get locked, and who can see your screen.
Confess to one another and pray.
This sin grows in secret. James tells believers to confess their sins to one another and pray for one another. Do not tell only God. Tell a pastor, a priest, or a trusted believer, according to your tradition.
God forgives and purifies.
If we confess, he is faithful to forgive and to purify. Shame says hide. Grace says come. There is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1).
Real situations
Where it shows up, and what to do.
Some of these are about your own heart. Some are about harm done to someone else. Both matter to God.
“It’s just AI. No real person got hurt.”
The defense does not hold
Jesus judges the heart that looks, and the model learned from photos of real people. Call it sin, confess it, and stop negotiating with it.
Using an app to make a sexual image of someone you know
Abuse. Stop now
It strips a neighbor of dignity. Sharing it can be a federal crime, and if they are under 18 it is child sexual abuse material. Delete it, confess it, and tell a pastor or parent today, especially if it was shared, so it can be reported and taken down.
You are married, and your spouse does not know
Tell the truth
Jesus calls lust adultery of the heart, and “only AI” does not shrink that. Confess to God, then to your spouse, without minimizing it. Get help together from a pastor or Christian counselor.
Someone made a fake nude of you
The shame is not yours
You did nothing wrong. Report it on each platform, ask for removal through StopNCII.org or NCMEC’s Take It Down, and tell someone you trust. If you are a teen, tell a parent or another safe adult.
Your teen was targeted by a deepfake nude, or was sent one
Stay calm and act
Tell your teen it is not their fault, and do not forward the image. If someone is threatening to share it unless your teen pays or sends more, do not pay and stop replying; keep the messages. Report it to the CyberTipline, use Take It Down, and tell the school if classmates are involved. If your teen seems hopeless, call or text 988 in the U.S. Then set filters and talk early and often with all your kids.
You keep going back, and you cannot stop
Bring it into the light
God provides a way out (1 Corinthians 10:13). Tell one trusted believer, set up filters and accountability, delete the apps, and pray Psalm 51. If it has become compulsive, see a counselor. That is wisdom, not failure.
Common questions
Plain answers, without invented certainty.
Is AI porn a sin?
Yes. Jesus locates lust in the heart of the one looking (Matthew 5:28), so AI-generated porn is not exempt. It also feeds coveting and often depends on real people’s photos. There is grace and a way out for anyone caught in it.
Is AI porn still a sin if it’s not a real person?
Yes. The sin Jesus names happens in the one looking, so a fictional body does not make lust clean. And “not a real person” is often untrue: these models learn from real photos, and some tools turn real people’s photos into fake nudes.
Is AI porn still lust?
Yes. Lust is sexual desire for what is not yours, welcomed and fed instead of refused. An image made to your exact preferences feeds it more precisely, not less. Being tempted is not sinning, since Jesus was tempted without sin (Hebrews 4:15). Going looking is feeding it.
Is AI porn cheating?
Yes, in the way Jesus meant. He calls lustful looking adultery in the heart (Matthew 5:28), and a generated image does not change that. It is not an affair, but it is unfaithfulness, and hiding it adds to the harm. Tell your spouse the truth and get help together from a pastor or Christian counselor.
What does the Bible say about AI pornography?
The Bible does not mention AI, but it speaks plainly to what AI porn is. Jesus names lust of the heart (Matthew 5:27-28). God forbids coveting (Exodus 20:17). Paul calls believers to holiness in their bodies (1 Thessalonians 4:3-5). And God forgives all who confess (1 John 1:9).
Is ChatGPT erotica a sin?
Yes. Erotica is written to arouse, and words from ChatGPT or any chatbot can feed lust as surely as images. An “adult mode” is a product setting, not a moral permission. If a chatbot has become a romantic or sexual partner, see the guides on AI romance and Character AI.
What is the Christian view on AI deepfake nudes?
Making or sharing one is abuse. It treats someone made in God’s image as an object, and sharing it bears false witness. In the U.S., knowingly publishing these images without consent is, in most cases, a federal crime under the TAKE IT DOWN Act.
Someone made a deepfake nude of me. What should I do?
The shame is not yours. Psalm 34:5 in the Lumin Translation: “They looked to him and shone with joy, and their faces will never be disgraced.” Report the image on each platform. Use StopNCII.org if the image shows you as an adult, or NCMEC’s Take It Down if it shows you under 18. In the U.S., if a platform does not remove it within 48 hours of a valid request, report it at TakeItDown.ftc.gov. Tell someone you trust. If you are a teen, tell a parent or another safe adult. If someone is threatening to share it unless you pay or send more, do not pay and stop replying. Keep the messages and report it to the CyberTipline (under 18) or the FBI at tips.fbi.gov. If you feel hopeless or think about hurting yourself, call or text 988 in the U.S.
How do I stop looking at AI porn?
Confess it to God, who forgives (1 John 1:9), and tell a trusted believer, pastor, or priest (James 5:16). Delete the apps and turn on filters and accountability. If it has become compulsive, see a counselor. Grace is not the reward for stopping. It is what makes stopping possible.
Does Lumin make sexual content?
No. Lumin is a Bible companion that answers with Scripture you can open. It does not generate pictures of people, play characters, or flirt, and it is not a counselor or an accountability partner. Getting free will take God’s grace and people who know your name.
