Bible answers
What does the Bible say about lust?
The Bible calls lust desire aimed at what is not yours: coveting a person, looking with intent, feeding a craving until it rules you. It is not the same as desire within marriage, which Scripture honors. The Bible is blunt about lust and just as clear about mercy — flee it, confess it, and walk with people who call on the Lord. Shame is not the cure. Honesty, grace, and help from real people are.
Bible verses about lust
- Exodus 20:17The tenth commandment: do not covet your neighbor’s wife or belongings — desire aimed at what is not yours.
- Matthew 5:27-28Jesus intensifies the seventh commandment: looking with lustful intent is adultery of the heart.
- Mark 7:20-23Defilement comes from within: evil thoughts, sexual immorality, and coveting are listed among what proceeds from the heart.
- James 1:14-15Each person is tempted when desire lures; desire conceives, gives birth to sin, and sin to death.
- Colossians 3:5Put to death sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness.
- 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5God’s will is sanctification: control your own body in holiness, not in the passion of lust.
- 1 Corinthians 6:18-20Flee sexual immorality; your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, bought with a price.
- 2 Timothy 2:22Flee youthful passions; pursue righteousness with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.
But I tell you that every man who gazes at a woman to lust for her has in his heart already committed adultery with her.Jesus moves the question from behavior to the heart: lust is adultery that happens inside before it happens anywhere else. James traces the sequence — desire, then sin, then death. That could sound hopeless, but Scripture pairs the warning with a way out. Job makes a covenant with his eyes. Paul says to make no provision for the flesh and to fill your mind with whatever is true, honorable, and pure. And when you fail, God is faithful to forgive and cleanse those who confess (1 John 1:9).
“Flee” is usually ordinary: close the tab, leave the room, text a friend, open the passage. If the pattern has become compulsive, willpower alone is rarely enough. Tell your pastor, and ask about skilled help. Scripture is not asking you to stop desiring. It is asking you to desire rightly.
