Bible answers
What does the Bible say about contentment?
Contentment in Scripture is learned, not inherited. Paul has found the secret of plenty and of want through Christ who strengthens him. Godliness with contentment is great gain. The opposite is a heart owned by what it lacks. You can still work and hope for change without letting restlessness become a god.
Bible verses about contentment
- Philippians 4:11-13Paul has learned to be content in any circumstance; he can do all this through Christ who strengthens him.
- 1 Timothy 6:6-8Godliness with contentment is great gain; we brought nothing into the world, and food and clothing are enough.
- Hebrews 13:5Keep your life free from the love of money; be content, for God will never leave you.
- Psalm 23:1The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
- Proverbs 30:8-9Give me neither poverty nor riches, only my daily bread, so I neither forget God nor dishonor him.
- Luke 12:15Guard against all greed; life is not measured by how much you own.
- Ecclesiastes 5:10Whoever loves money never has enough; this too is meaningless.
- Psalm 16:5-6The Lord is my portion and my cup; the boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places.
I am not saying this out of need, for I have learned to be satisfied in whatever situation I am in.Contentment is freedom from being owned by the next thing. It is not laziness, and it is not a command to call a bad situation good. Paul learned it in prison and in plenty. Practice starts small: thanks for what is already given, and a looser grip on more.
