Bible answers
What does the Bible say about anger?
The Bible does not treat anger as something to ignore, but it asks us to handle it with care. The repeated counsel is to be slow to it, to keep it from hardening into sin, and not to let it set up residence in us.
Bible verses about anger
- James 1:19-20Be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger; human anger doesn’t produce God’s righteousness.
- Ephesians 4:26-27Be angry without sinning; don’t let the sun go down on it or give the devil a foothold.
- Proverbs 15:1A gentle answer turns away wrath; a harsh word stirs up anger.
- Proverbs 29:11A fool vents all his anger, but a wise person holds it back.
- Colossians 3:8Put away anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy speech.
- Proverbs 14:29Whoever is slow to anger has great understanding, but a quick temper exalts folly.
- Matthew 5:21-22Jesus says that anger toward a brother or sister is subject to judgment, not only murder.
- Psalm 4:4Tremble and do not sin; speak in your heart on your bed and be still. Paul echoes this line in Ephesians 4:26.
Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: every person must be ready to listen, in no hurry to speak, and slow to anger, for a person’s anger does not accomplish the righteousness of God.Scripture’s wisdom is about timing and direction. Anger that listens first, cools before it speaks, and refuses to nurse a grudge overnight can be honest without becoming destructive. The goal is not numbness but anger that has been handed to God before it is handed to anyone else.
