What does the Bible say about faith?

Faith in Scripture is trust in a trustworthy God, not a personality type and not a volume knob on certainty. It comes by hearing the word, clings to Christ, and then becomes visible in obedience and love. The Bible makes room for weak faith and still refuses a faith that never moves.

Bible verses about faith

8 passages from 6 books, in the New Testament
  • Hebrews 11:1Faith is confidence in what is hoped for and conviction about what is not seen.
  • Ephesians 2:8-9You are saved by grace through faith; it is a gift, not a result of works.
  • Romans 10:17Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
  • James 2:17Faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
  • Hebrews 11:6Without faith it is impossible to please God; whoever comes to him must believe he exists and rewards those who seek him.
  • Mark 9:24A father cries out to Jesus: I believe; help my unbelief.
  • Matthew 17:20Faith as small as a mustard seed can move mountains.
  • Romans 1:17The righteous will live by faith.
Now faith is the firm foundation of what we hope for, the proof of what we do not see.
Hebrews 11:1 · Lumin Translation

Biblical faith is less a mood than a direction: toward the God who has spoken and acted. It can coexist with questions. What it cannot remain is a private opinion that never trusts, never hears, and never loves a neighbor.
