What does the Bible say about heaven?
In Scripture, heaven is first the place of God’s presence, then the hope of being with Christ after death, and finally a new heaven and a new earth where God lives with his people. The treasure is God himself, not a tour of golden streets. The Bible gives enough to live on, not a map: it promises presence and joy, and leaves many details unsaid.
Bible verses about heaven
- Psalm 16:11In God’s presence there is fullness of joy; at his right hand are pleasures forevermore.
- Psalm 73:25-26“Whom do I have in heaven but you?” — God himself is the treasure, even when flesh and heart fail.
- John 14:1-3Jesus tells troubled hearts he prepares a place and will take his own to himself.
- Luke 23:43To the thief: “Today you will be with me in paradise” — often cited for hope between death and resurrection.
- 2 Corinthians 5:1-8An earthly tent versus a building from God; away from the body, at home with the Lord.
- Philippians 3:20-21Citizenship is in heaven; we await a Savior who will transform our lowly body.
- 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17The Lord descends; the dead in Christ rise; then we are always with the Lord.
- Revelation 21:1-5A new heaven and a new earth; God dwells with his people and wipes away every tear.
He will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will not exist any longer, and neither will grief or crying or pain, because the former things have gone away.”The thread through every one of these passages is presence. In God’s presence is fullness of joy. Jesus goes to prepare a place so that his friends can be where he is. Paul says that to be away from the body is to be at home with the Lord, and that one day we will always be with him. At the end, the story comes down to earth: God makes all things new, dwells with his people, and wipes away every tear.
Christians differ on how these pieces fit together — how “today you will be with me in paradise” relates to the resurrection of the body and the new creation of Revelation 21. Those are real questions, and your church’s teaching can help you hold them. But you do not need a floor plan to have hope. The promise is God with us, forever.
