Ecclesiastes 6
Lumin Translation 2.0 checked against the Hebrew and Greek How it was made
There is an evil that I have seen under the sun, and it weighs heavily on humankind:
a man to whom God gives riches, possessions, and honor, so that he lacks nothing of all he desires, yet God does not enable him to enjoy them; instead a stranger enjoys them. This is futile, a grievous sickness.
If a man fathers a hundred children and lives many years—however many the days of his years may be—but he is not satisfied with good things, and he does not even receive a burial, I say that a stillborn child is better off than he is.
For it comes in futility and goes into darkness, and in darkness its name is covered.
It has never seen the sun or known anything, yet it has more rest than he does.
Even if he lives a thousand years twice over but does not enjoy good things—do not all go to one place?
All human toil is for the mouth, yet the appetite is never satisfied.
For what advantage do the wise have over the fool? What does the poor person gain by knowing how to conduct himself before the living?
Better what the eyes can see than the wandering of desire. This too is futile, a chasing of the wind.
Whatever has come to be has already been named, and what humans are is known; they cannot contend with one who is stronger than they are.
For the more words there are, the more futility; and what advantage is that to anyone?
For who knows what is good for people in life, during the few days of their fleeting life, which they pass like a shadow? For who can tell them what will happen after them under the sun?
