Eliud fathered Eleazar, Eleazar fathered Matthan, and Matthan fathered Jacob.
Jacob fathered Joseph the husband of Mary, and from her was born Jesus, who is called the Messiah.
All the generations, then, from Abraham to David numbered fourteen; from David to the deportation to Babylon, fourteen; and from the deportation to Babylon to the Messiah, fourteen.
The birth of Jesus Christ happened like this. His mother Mary was engaged to Joseph, but before they came together as husband and wife, she was discovered to be expecting a child from the Holy Spirit.
Joseph, her husband, was a righteous man and had no wish to make a public spectacle of her, so he resolved to divorce her in private.
But while he was turning this over in his mind, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to receive Mary as your wife, because it is by the Holy Spirit that the child has been conceived in her.
She will give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus, for he is the one who will save his people from their sins.”
All of this has taken place so that the word spoken by the Lord through the prophet might be fulfilled:
“Look, the virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel,” which means “God with us.”
When Joseph rose from sleep, he followed the instructions the angel of the Lord had given him and took his wife home,
but he had no sexual union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he named him Jesus.
