Matthew 16

Lumin Translation 2.0 checked against the Hebrew and Greek How it was made

The Pharisees and Sadducees came up to test Jesus, and they asked him to produce a sign from heaven for them.

He answered them, “In the evening you say, ‘The weather will be fine, because the sky is red.’

And in the morning, ‘There will be a storm today, because the sky is red and threatening.’ You know how to read the face of the sky, but can you not read the signs of the times?

An evil and adulterous generation demands a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” Then he left them and went away.

The disciples came to the other side, but they had forgotten to take bread along.

Jesus said to them, “Take care, and watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”

So they talked it over among themselves and said, “We did not bring bread.”

Jesus knew it and said, “Why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread, you people of little faith?

Do you not yet understand? Do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you collected?

Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you collected?

How can you fail to see that I was not speaking to you about bread? But watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”

Then they realized that he had not told them to watch out for the yeast in bread, but for the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

After Jesus arrived in the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who are people saying the Son of Man is?”

They said, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

He said to them, “And you—who do you say I am?”

Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

Jesus said to him in reply, “You are blessed, Simon son of Jonah, because it was not flesh and blood that revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.

And I also tell you this: you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prove stronger than it.

I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth will stand bound in heaven, and whatever you release on earth will stand released in heaven.”

Then he gave the disciples strict orders to tell no one that he was the Messiah.

From then on Jesus began to make clear to his disciples that he had to go away to Jerusalem, suffer much at the hands of the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be put to death, and on the third day be raised.

Peter pulled him aside and started to rebuke him: “May God spare you this, Lord! It will never happen to you.”

But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a snare to me, for you are thinking not God’s thoughts but human thoughts.”

Then Jesus told his disciples, “Anyone who wishes to come after me must deny themselves, pick up their cross, and follow me.

For whoever wants to keep their life safe will lose it, but anyone who loses their life on my account will find it.

For what benefit will a person have if they gain the whole world but lose their life? Or what will anyone give as the price of their life?

For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory together with his angels, and then he will repay each one according to their deeds.

Truly I tell you, some of those standing here will certainly not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”
