Numbers 26

1After the plague, Yahweh said to Moses and to Eleazar son of Aaron the priest,

2“Take a census of the whole congregation of the Israelites, those twenty years old and upward, by their ancestral houses, everyone in Israel who is able to go to war.”

3So Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them in the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho and said,

4“Count those twenty years old and upward,” as Yahweh had commanded Moses. These were the Israelites who came out of the land of Egypt:

5Reuben, Israel’s firstborn. The descendants of Reuben: from Hanoch, the clan of the Hanochites; from Pallu, the clan of the Palluites;

6from Hezron, the clan of the Hezronites; from Carmi, the clan of the Carmites.

7These were the clans of the Reubenites; those registered numbered 43,730.

8The son of Pallu was Eliab,

9and the sons of Eliab were Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram. These are the same Dathan and Abiram, men chosen from the congregation, who fought against Moses and Aaron as part of Korah’s company when they fought against Yahweh.

10The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them along with Korah when that company died, when the fire consumed 250 men. They became a warning sign.

11The sons of Korah, however, did not die.

12The descendants of Simeon by their clans: from Nemuel, the clan of the Nemuelites; from Jamin, the clan of the Jaminites; from Jachin, the clan of the Jachinites;

13from Zerah, the clan of the Zerahites; from Shaul, the clan of the Shaulites.

14These were the clans of the Simeonites: 22,200.

15The descendants of Gad by their clans: from Zephon, the clan of the Zephonites; from Haggi, the clan of the Haggites; from Shuni, the clan of the Shunites;

16from Ozni, the clan of the Oznites; from Eri, the clan of the Erites;

17from Arod, the clan of the Arodites; from Areli, the clan of the Arelites.

18These were the clans of the descendants of Gad; those registered numbered 40,500.

19The sons of Judah were Er and Onan, but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan.

20The descendants of Judah by their clans were: from Shelah, the clan of the Shelanites; from Perez, the clan of the Perezites; from Zerah, the clan of the Zerahites.

21The descendants of Perez were: from Hezron, the clan of the Hezronites; from Hamul, the clan of the Hamulites.

22These were the clans of Judah; those registered numbered 76,500.

23The descendants of Issachar by their clans: from Tola, the clan of the Tolaites; from Puvah, the clan of the Punites;

24from Jashub, the clan of the Jashubites; from Shimron, the clan of the Shimronites.

25These were the clans of Issachar; those registered numbered 64,300.

26The descendants of Zebulun by their clans: from Sered, the clan of the Seredites; from Elon, the clan of the Elonites; from Jahleel, the clan of the Jahleelites.

27These were the clans of the Zebulunites; those registered numbered 60,500.

28The descendants of Joseph by their clans: Manasseh and Ephraim.

29The descendants of Manasseh: from Machir, the clan of the Machirites. Machir was the father of Gilead; from Gilead, the clan of the Gileadites.

30These were the descendants of Gilead: from Iezer, the clan of the Iezerites; from Helek, the clan of the Helekites;

31from Asriel, the clan of the Asrielites; from Shechem, the clan of the Shechemites;

32from Shemida, the clan of the Shemidaites; from Hepher, the clan of the Hepherites.

33Zelophehad son of Hepher had no sons, only daughters. The names of Zelophehad’s daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.

34These were the clans of Manasseh; those registered numbered 52,700.

35These were the descendants of Ephraim by their clans: from Shuthelah, the clan of the Shuthelahites; from Becher, the clan of the Becherites; from Tahan, the clan of the Tahanites.

36These were the descendants of Shuthelah: from Eran, the clan of the Eranites.

37These were the clans of the descendants of Ephraim; those registered numbered 32,500. These were the descendants of Joseph by their clans.

38The descendants of Benjamin by their clans: from Bela, the clan of the Belaites; from Ashbel, the clan of the Ashbelites; from Ahiram, the clan of the Ahiramites;

39from Shupham, the clan of the Shuphamites; from Hupham, the clan of the Huphamites.

40The descendants of Bela were Ard and Naaman: from Ard, the clan of the Ardites; from Naaman, the clan of the Naamites.

41These were the descendants of Benjamin by their clans; those registered numbered 45,600.

42These were the descendants of Dan by their clans: from Shuham, the clan of the Shuhamites. These were the clans of Dan, clan by clan.

43All the clans of the Shuhamites, as registered, numbered 64,400.

44The descendants of Asher by their clans: from Imnah, the clan of the Imnites; from Ishvi, the clan of the Ishvites; from Beriah, the clan of the Beriites.

45From the descendants of Beriah: from Heber, the clan of the Heberites; from Malchiel, the clan of the Malchielites.

46The name of Asher’s daughter was Serah.

47These were the clans of the descendants of Asher; those registered numbered 53,400.

48The descendants of Naphtali by their clans: from Jahzeel, the clan of the Jahzeelites; from Guni, the clan of the Gunites;

49from Jezer, the clan of the Jezerites; from Shillem, the clan of the Shillemites.

50These were the clans of Naphtali, clan by clan; those registered numbered 45,400.

51These were the Israelites who were registered: 601,730.

52Yahweh said to Moses,

53“The land is to be divided among these as an inheritance according to the number of names.

54To a larger group you are to give a larger inheritance, and to a smaller group a smaller inheritance. Each group is to be given its inheritance according to the number of those registered in it.

55But the land is to be divided by lot. They are to receive their inheritance according to the names of their ancestral tribes.

56Each inheritance is to be divided by lot between the larger and the smaller groups.”

57These were the Levites registered by their clans: from Gershon, the clan of the Gershonites; from Kohath, the clan of the Kohathites; from Merari, the clan of the Merarites.

58These were the clans of Levi: the clan of the Libnites, the clan of the Hebronites, the clan of the Mahlites, the clan of the Mushites, and the clan of the Korahites. Kohath was the father of Amram.

59The name of Amram’s wife was Jochebed, the daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt. She bore to Amram Aaron and Moses and their sister Miriam.

60To Aaron were born Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.

61But Nadab and Abihu died when they offered unauthorized fire before Yahweh.

62Those registered among the Levites numbered twenty-three thousand, every male one month old and upward. They were not registered among the Israelites, because no inheritance was given to them among the Israelites.

63These were the ones registered by Moses and Eleazar the priest when they registered the Israelites in the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho.

64Among them there was not one man of those registered by Moses and Aaron the priest when they registered the Israelites in the wilderness of Sinai.

65For Yahweh had said of them that they would surely die in the wilderness. Not one of them was left except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
