Joshua 14

Lumin Translation 2.0 checked against the Hebrew and Greek How it was made

These are the inheritances that the Israelites received in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of the ancestral houses of the tribes of Israel distributed to them.

Their inheritance was assigned by lot, as Yahweh had commanded through Moses, for the nine and a half tribes.

For Moses had given the two and a half tribes their inheritance beyond the Jordan, but to the Levites he had given no inheritance among them.

For the descendants of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim. The Levites were given no share in the land, only towns to live in, with their pasturelands for their livestock and their possessions.

The Israelites did just as Yahweh had commanded Moses, and they divided the land.

Then the people of Judah came to Joshua at Gilgal, and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, “You know what Yahweh said to Moses the man of God about you and me at Kadesh-barnea.

I was forty years old when Moses the servant of Yahweh sent me from Kadesh-barnea to spy out the land, and I brought him back a report just as it was in my heart.

My brothers who went up with me made the people’s hearts melt, but I followed Yahweh my God completely.

So on that day Moses swore, ‘The land where your foot has walked will surely be an inheritance for you and your descendants forever, because you have followed Yahweh my God completely.’

And now, look, Yahweh has kept me alive, just as he said, these forty-five years since Yahweh spoke this word to Moses, while Israel journeyed in the wilderness. Here I am today, eighty-five years old.

I am still as strong today as I was on the day Moses sent me. My strength now is what it was then, for battle and for going out and coming in.

So now give me this hill country that Yahweh spoke about on that day. You yourself heard on that day that the Anakim were there, with great fortified cities. Perhaps Yahweh will be with me, and I will drive them out, just as Yahweh said.”

Joshua blessed him and gave Hebron to Caleb son of Jephunneh as an inheritance.

So Hebron has belonged to Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite as an inheritance to this day, because he followed Yahweh, the God of Israel, completely.

Hebron was formerly called Kiriath-arba; Arba was the greatest man among the Anakim. And the land had rest from war.
