Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through it.
There was a man there named Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector, and he was rich.
He was trying to see who Jesus was, but he could not because of the crowd, since he was a short man.
So he ran on ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see him, because Jesus was about to pass that way.
When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for today I must stay at your house.”
So he hurried down and welcomed him with joy.
When they saw it, they all began to grumble, “He has gone in to be the guest of a sinful man.”
But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, I am giving half of my possessions to the poor. And if I have cheated anyone of anything, I am paying back four times as much.”
Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham.
For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
While they were listening to this, he went on to tell a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and they thought that the kingdom of God was going to appear immediately.
So he said, “A man of noble birth went to a distant country to receive royal power for himself and then return.
He called ten of his servants, gave them ten minas, and said to them, ‘Put this money to work until I come back.’
But the people of his country hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, ‘We do not want this man to be king over us.’
After he received the royal power, he returned and ordered the servants to whom he had given the money to be called to him, so that he could find out what they had gained by their business.
The first came and said, ‘Master, your mina has earned ten more minas.’
He said to him, ‘Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in a very small matter, you are to have authority over ten cities.’
The second came and said, ‘Master, your mina has made five minas.’
He said to this one too, ‘You are to be over five cities.’
Then another came and said, ‘Master, here is your mina. I kept it put away in a cloth.
I was afraid of you, because you are a harsh man. You take what you did not deposit and reap what you did not sow.’
He said to him, ‘I will judge you by your own words, you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a harsh man, taking what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow?
Why then did you not put my money in the bank? When I came back, I could have collected it with interest.’
He said to those standing by, ‘Take the mina from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.’
They said to him, ‘Master, he already has ten minas!’
‘I tell you, to everyone who has, more will be given, but from the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away.
But as for these enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them, bring them here and slaughter them in front of me.’ ”
After he had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
As he approached Bethphage and Bethany, at the hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples
and said, “Go into the village ahead of you. As you enter it, you will find a colt tied there that no one has ever sat on. Untie it and bring it here.
If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ say this: ‘The Lord needs it.’ ”
Those who were sent went and found it just as he had told them.
As they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?”
They said, “The Lord needs it.”
They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt, and put Jesus on it.
As he rode along, people were spreading their cloaks on the road.
As he was now approaching the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles they had seen.
They said, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest!”
Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.”
He answered, “I tell you, if these keep silent, the stones will cry out.”
As he came near and saw the city, he wept over it
and said, “If only you had known on this day, even you, the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.
For the days will come upon you when your enemies will build a barricade around you, surround you, and hem you in on every side.
They will dash you to the ground, you and your children within you, and they will not leave one stone on another within you, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.”
Then he entered the temple and began to drive out those who were selling there.
He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house will be a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a den of robbers.”
He was teaching every day in the temple. The chief priests and the scribes, along with the leaders of the people, were looking for a way to kill him,
but they could not find any way to do it, because all the people were hanging on his every word.
