Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, which is called the Passover, was approaching.
The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to put him to death, for they were afraid of the people.
Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, who was one of the Twelve.
He went away and discussed with the chief priests and the officers how he might hand Jesus over to them.
They were delighted and agreed to give him money.
He consented and began looking for a good opportunity to hand him over to them when no crowd was present.
Then came the day of Unleavened Bread, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.
Jesus sent Peter and John and said, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, so that we can eat it.”
They said to him, “Where do you want us to prepare it?”
He said to them, “Listen. When you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house he enters,
and say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?” ’
He will show you a large upstairs room, already furnished. Prepare it there.”
They went and found things just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.
When the hour came, he reclined at the table, and the apostles with him.
He said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.
For I tell you, I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”
Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he said, “Take this and share it among yourselves.
For I tell you, from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”
Then he took bread, and after giving thanks he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
In the same way he took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.
But look, the hand of the one who is betraying me is with mine on the table.
For the Son of Man is going as it has been determined, but how terrible it will be for that man by whom he is betrayed!”
They began to question one another about which of them it could be who was going to do this.
A dispute also arose among them about which of them was regarded as the greatest.
He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who have authority over them are called benefactors.
But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the one who leads like the one who serves.
For who is greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But I am among you as the one who serves.
You are the ones who have stood by me in my trials.
And I grant you a kingdom, just as my Father granted one to me,
so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and you will sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
Simon, Simon, listen: Satan has demanded to have all of you, to sift you like wheat.
But I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”
Peter said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death.”
Jesus said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times that you know me.”
Then he said to them, “When I sent you out without a money bag, a traveler’s bag, or sandals, did you lack anything?” They said, “Nothing.”
He said to them, “But now, whoever has a money bag must take it, and a traveler’s bag too. And whoever has none must sell his cloak and buy a sword.
For I tell you, this Scripture must be fulfilled in me: ‘And he was counted among the lawless.’ For what concerns me is coming to its fulfillment.”
They said, “Lord, look, here are two swords.” He said to them, “That is enough.”
He went out and, as was his habit, went to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him.
When he reached the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not come into temptation.”
Then he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, knelt down, and prayed,
“Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me. Yet not my will, but yours be done.”
An angel from heaven appeared to him, strengthening him.
In anguish he prayed more fervently, and his sweat became like thick drops of blood falling to the ground.
When he got up from prayer and came to the disciples, he found them sleeping because of their grief.
He said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you will not come into temptation.”
While he was still speaking, a crowd appeared, and the man called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He came up to Jesus to kiss him.
But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”
When those around him saw what was about to happen, they said, “Lord, should we strike with the sword?”
Then one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear.
But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.
Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders who had come out against him, “Have you come out with swords and clubs as if against a robber?
Day after day I was with you in the temple, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness.”
Then they seized him, led him away, and brought him into the high priest’s house. Peter was following at a distance.
When they had lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them.
A servant girl saw him sitting in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, “This man was with him too.”
But he denied it and said, “Woman, I do not know him.”
A little later someone else saw him and said, “You are one of them too.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not.”
About an hour later another man insisted, “Certainly this man was with him too, for he is a Galilean.”
But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.
The Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.”
He went outside and wept bitterly.
The men who were holding Jesus began mocking him and beating him.
They blindfolded him and kept asking him, “Prophesy! Who is it that hit you?”
And they said many other insulting things against him.
When day came, the council of the elders of the people gathered, both chief priests and scribes, and they led him away to their Sanhedrin.
They said, “If you are the Messiah, tell us.” He said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe,
and if I ask you, you will not answer.
But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.”
They all said, “Are you the Son of God, then?” He said to them, “You say that I am.”
Then they said, “Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it ourselves from his own mouth.”
