The leaders of the people settled in Jerusalem, and the rest of the people cast lots to bring one out of every ten to live in Jerusalem, the holy city, while the other nine stayed in the other towns.

The people blessed all the men who volunteered to live in Jerusalem.

These are the leaders of the province who lived in Jerusalem. In the towns of Judah, each lived on his own property in their towns: Israelites, priests, Levites, temple servants, and the descendants of Solomon’s servants.

In Jerusalem lived some of the descendants of Judah and some of the descendants of Benjamin. Of the descendants of Judah: Athaiah son of Uzziah, son of Zechariah, son of Amariah, son of Shephatiah, son of Mahalalel, of the descendants of Perez;

and Maaseiah son of Baruch, son of Col-hozeh, son of Hazaiah, son of Adaiah, son of Joiarib, son of Zechariah, son of the Shilonite.

All the descendants of Perez who lived in Jerusalem were 468 capable men.

These are the descendants of Benjamin: Sallu son of Meshullam, son of Joed, son of Pedaiah, son of Kolaiah, son of Maaseiah, son of Ithiel, son of Jeshaiah,

and after him Gabbai and Sallai, 928.

Joel son of Zichri was the officer over them, and Judah son of Hassenuah was second in charge of the city.

Of the priests: Jedaiah son of Joiarib, Jachin,

Seraiah son of Hilkiah, son of Meshullam, son of Zadok, son of Meraioth, son of Ahitub, the chief officer of the house of God,

and their brothers who did the work of the house, 822; and Adaiah son of Jeroham, son of Pelaliah, son of Amzi, son of Zechariah, son of Pashhur, son of Malchijah,

and his brothers, heads of ancestral houses, 242; and Amashsai son of Azarel, son of Ahzai, son of Meshillemoth, son of Immer,

and their brothers, mighty warriors, 128. Their officer was Zabdiel son of Haggedolim.

Of the Levites: Shemaiah son of Hasshub, son of Azrikam, son of Hashabiah, son of Bunni;

and Shabbethai and Jozabad, of the leaders of the Levites, who were in charge of the outside work of the house of God;

and Mattaniah son of Mica, son of Zabdi, son of Asaph, the leader who began the thanksgiving in prayer; and Bakbukiah, the second among his brothers; and Abda son of Shammua, son of Galal, son of Jeduthun.

All the Levites in the holy city were 284.

The gatekeepers: Akkub, Talmon, and their brothers, who kept watch at the gates, 172.

The rest of Israel, with the priests and the Levites, lived in all the towns of Judah, each on his own inheritance.

The temple servants lived on Ophel, and Ziha and Gishpa were in charge of the temple servants.

The officer of the Levites in Jerusalem was Uzzi son of Bani, son of Hashabiah, son of Mattaniah, son of Mica, of the descendants of Asaph, the singers, who were in charge of the service of the house of God.

For there was a command from the king concerning them, and a fixed provision for the singers, as each day required.

Pethahiah son of Meshezabel, of the descendants of Zerah son of Judah, was at the king’s side in all matters concerning the people.

As for the villages with their fields, some of the descendants of Judah lived in Kiriath-arba and its towns, in Dibon and its towns, in Jekabzeel and its villages,

in Jeshua, in Moladah, in Beth-pelet,

in Hazar-shual, in Beersheba and its towns,

in Ziklag, in Meconah and its towns,

in En-rimmon, in Zorah, in Jarmuth,

Zanoah, Adullam, and their villages, Lachish and its fields, and Azekah and its towns. So they settled from Beersheba as far as the Valley of Hinnom.

The descendants of Benjamin lived from Geba onward, at Michmash, Aija, Bethel and its towns,

Anathoth, Nob, Ananiah,

Hazor, Ramah, Gittaim,

Hadid, Zeboim, Neballat,

Lod, Ono, and the Valley of Craftsmen.

Some of the divisions of the Levites that had been in Judah were assigned to Benjamin.
