Genesis 25

Lumin Translation 2.0 checked against the Hebrew and Greek How it was made

Abraham took another wife, whose name was Keturah.

She bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.

Jokshan became the father of Sheba and Dedan. The descendants of Dedan were the Asshurim, the Letushim, and the Leummim.

The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All these were descendants of Keturah.

Abraham gave everything he owned to Isaac.

But to the sons of his concubines Abraham gave gifts, and while he was still living he sent them away from his son Isaac, eastward to the land of the east.

These are the years of Abraham’s life: he lived 175 years.

Then Abraham breathed his last and died at a good old age, an old man who had lived a full life, and he was gathered to his people.

His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron son of Zohar the Hittite, near Mamre,

the field Abraham had bought from the Hittites. There Abraham was buried with his wife Sarah.

After the death of Abraham, God blessed his son Isaac. And Isaac lived near Beer Lahai Roi.

This is the account of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s servant, bore to Abraham.

These are the names of the sons of Ishmael, listed by name in the order of their birth: Nebaioth the firstborn of Ishmael, then Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,

Mishma, Dumah, Massa,

Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah.

These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names by their settlements and their camps: twelve chiefs of their tribes.

These are the years of Ishmael’s life: 137 years. He breathed his last and died, and he was gathered to his people.

His descendants settled from Havilah to Shur, which is east of Egypt in the direction of Assyria. He lived in defiance of all his relatives.

This is the account of Isaac, Abraham’s son. Abraham became the father of Isaac.

Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean from Paddan Aram and the sister of Laban the Aramean.

Isaac prayed to Yahweh for his wife, because she was unable to have children. Yahweh answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah conceived.

The children struggled together inside her, and she said, “If this is how it is, why is this happening to me?” So she went to inquire of Yahweh.

Yahweh said to her, “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be divided; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.”

When her time came to give birth, there were twins in her womb.

The first came out red, his whole body like a hairy cloak, so they named him Esau.

After that his brother came out with his hand gripping Esau’s heel, so he was named Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when she gave birth to them.

When the boys grew up, Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the open country, while Jacob was a quiet man who stayed among the tents.

Isaac loved Esau because he had a taste for wild game, but Rebekah loved Jacob.

Once when Jacob was cooking stew, Esau came in from the open country, exhausted.

Esau said to Jacob, “Let me gulp down some of that red stuff, that red stuff, because I am exhausted!” That is why he was called Edom.

Jacob said, “Sell me your birthright right now.”

Esau said, “Look, I am about to die. What good is a birthright to me?”

Jacob said, “Swear to me right now.” So he swore an oath to him and sold his birthright to Jacob.

Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew. He ate and drank, got up, and went away. So Esau despised his birthright.
