Job 21

Lumin Translation 2.0 checked against the Hebrew and Greek How it was made

Then Job answered:

“Listen carefully to my words, and let this be the comfort you give me.

Bear with me while I speak, and after I have spoken, you may mock.

As for me, is my complaint against a human being? Why should I not be impatient?

Look at me and be appalled; put your hand over your mouth.

When I think about it, I am dismayed, and shuddering seizes my body.

Why do the wicked go on living, growing old and even growing mighty in power?

Their children are established in their presence, their offspring before their eyes.

Their houses are safe from fear; the rod of God is not on them.

Their bull breeds without fail; their cow calves and does not miscarry.

They send out their little ones like a flock, and their children dance.

They sing to the tambourine and lyre and rejoice at the sound of the flute.

They spend their days in prosperity and go down to Sheol in an instant.

Yet they say to God, ‘Leave us alone! We do not want to know your ways.

Who is the Almighty, that we should serve him? What would we gain by praying to him?’

Look, their prosperity is not in their own hands; the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

How often is the lamp of the wicked put out? How often does disaster come on them, the pains God deals out in his anger?

How often are they like straw before the wind, like chaff that a storm sweeps away?

Does God store up a man’s punishment for his children? Let him repay the man himself, so that he knows it.

Let his own eyes see his ruin; let him drink the wrath of the Almighty.

For what does he care about his household after he is gone, when the number of his months has been cut off?

Can anyone teach God knowledge, since he judges even those on high?

One person dies in full vigor, completely secure and at ease,

his pails full of milk and the marrow of his bones moist.

Another dies with a bitter soul, never having tasted anything good.

Together they lie down in the dust, and worms cover them both.

Look, I know your thoughts, the schemes by which you would wrong me.

For you say, ‘Where is the house of the great man now? Where is the tent the wicked lived in?’

Have you not asked those who travel the roads? Do you not accept their evidence,

that the evil person is spared on the day of disaster, rescued on the day of wrath?

Who confronts him to his face about his conduct? Who repays him for what he has done?

He is carried to the grave, and watch is kept over his tomb.

The clods of the valley are sweet to him; everyone follows after him, and countless people went before him.

How then can you comfort me with empty words? Nothing is left of your answers but falsehood.”
