Deuteronomy 22

Lumin Translation 2.0 checked against the Hebrew and Greek How it was made

If you see a fellow Israelite’s ox or sheep straying, do not ignore it. Be sure to take it back to him.

If he does not live near you, or you do not know who he is, bring the animal home and keep it with you until he comes looking for it; then give it back to him.

Do the same with his donkey, with his cloak, and with anything else your fellow Israelite loses and you find. You must not ignore it.

If you see a fellow Israelite’s donkey or ox fallen down on the road, do not ignore it. Be sure to help him get it back on its feet.

A woman must not wear men’s clothing, and a man must not put on a woman’s garment, for everyone who does these things is detestable to Yahweh your God.

If you come across a bird’s nest along the road, in any tree or on the ground, with young birds or eggs, and the mother is sitting on the young or on the eggs, do not take the mother along with the young.

Be sure to let the mother go, though you may take the young for yourself, so that it may go well with you and you may live long.

When you build a new house, make a railing around your roof, so that you do not bring the guilt of bloodshed on your house if someone falls from it.

Do not plant your vineyard with two kinds of seed, or the whole crop will be forfeited to the sanctuary, both the seed you have sown and the fruit of the vineyard.

Do not plow with an ox and a donkey together.

Do not wear clothing of mixed fabric, wool and linen woven together.

Make tassels on the four corners of the cloak you wrap around yourself.

If a man marries a woman and sleeps with her, and then turns against her,

accuses her of shameful conduct, and gives her a bad name, saying, ‘I married this woman, but when I came near her, I did not find proof that she was a virgin,’

then the young woman’s father and mother are to take the proof of her virginity and bring it out to the elders of the city at the gate.

The young woman’s father is to say to the elders, ‘I gave my daughter to this man as his wife, but he has turned against her.

Now he has accused her of shameful conduct, saying, “I did not find proof that your daughter was a virgin.” But here is the proof of my daughter’s virginity.’ Then they are to spread out the cloth before the elders of the city.

The elders of that city are to take the man and punish him.

They are to fine him a hundred shekels of silver and give it to the young woman’s father, because the man has given a virgin of Israel a bad name. She is to remain his wife, and he may not divorce her as long as he lives.

But if the charge is true and no proof of the young woman’s virginity is found,

they are to bring the young woman out to the entrance of her father’s house, and the men of her town are to stone her to death, because she has done an outrageous thing in Israel by acting like a prostitute while in her father’s house. You must purge the evil from among you.

If a man is found lying with a woman who is married to another man, both of them must die, the man who lay with the woman and the woman. You must purge the evil from Israel.

If a young woman who is a virgin is engaged to a man, and another man meets her in the town and lies with her,

you are to bring them both out to the gate of that town and stone them to death—the young woman because she did not cry out for help though she was in the town, and the man because he violated his neighbor’s wife. You must purge the evil from among you.

But if the man meets the engaged young woman in the open country, and he seizes her and lies with her, then only the man who lay with her is to die.

Do nothing to the young woman; she has committed no sin that deserves death. This case is like that of a man who attacks his neighbor and murders him.

For he met her in the open country, and though the engaged young woman cried out, there was no one to rescue her.

If a man meets a young woman who is a virgin and not engaged, and he seizes her and lies with her, and they are discovered,

the man who lay with her is to give the young woman’s father fifty shekels of silver, and she is to become his wife, because he has violated her. He may not divorce her as long as he lives.

A man must not marry his father’s wife; he must not dishonor his father’s bed.
