In the twelfth year, in the twelfth month, on the first day of the month, the word of Yahweh came to me:
“Son of man, take up a lament over Pharaoh king of Egypt, and say to him, ‘You think of yourself as a lion among the nations, but you are like a monster in the seas. You thrash about in your rivers, stir up the water with your feet, and muddy their rivers.
This is what Lord Yahweh says: I will spread my net over you with an assembly of many peoples, and they will haul you up in my dragnet.
I will leave you on the land and fling you onto the open field. I will let all the birds of the sky settle on you, and I will let the animals of the whole earth eat their fill of you.
I will spread your flesh on the mountains and fill the valleys with your carcass.
I will drench the land with your flowing blood, up to the mountains, and the ravines will be filled with you.
When I snuff you out, I will cover the heavens and darken their stars. I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon will not give its light.
All the shining lights in the heavens I will darken over you, and I will bring darkness on your land, declares Lord Yahweh.
I will trouble the hearts of many peoples when I bring your destruction among the nations, to countries you have not known.
I will make many peoples appalled at you, and their kings will shudder with horror over you when I brandish my sword before them. On the day of your fall they will tremble every moment, each one for his own life.
For this is what Lord Yahweh says: The sword of the king of Babylon will come against you.
I will make your hordes fall by the swords of mighty men, all of them the most ruthless of the nations. They will shatter the pride of Egypt, and all its hordes will be destroyed.
I will destroy all its cattle from beside the abundant waters. No human foot will muddy them again, and no animal’s hooves will muddy them.
Then I will let their waters settle and make their rivers run like oil, declares Lord Yahweh.
When I make the land of Egypt desolate, and the land is stripped of everything in it, when I strike down all who live there, then they will know that I am Yahweh.’
This is a lament, and they will chant it. The daughters of the nations will chant it; over Egypt and over all its hordes they will chant it, declares Lord Yahweh.”
In the twelfth year, on the fifteenth day of the month, the word of Yahweh came to me:
“Son of man, wail over the hordes of Egypt, and send them down, her and the daughters of mighty nations, to the world below, with those who go down to the pit.
Whom do you surpass in beauty? Go down and be laid to rest with the uncircumcised!
They will fall among those killed by the sword. The sword is appointed; drag her away with all her hordes.
From the middle of Sheol the mightiest warriors will speak to him and his helpers: ‘They have come down; they lie still, the uncircumcised, killed by the sword.’
Assyria is there with all her company, her graves all around her, all of them slain, fallen by the sword.
Her graves are set in the farthest depths of the pit, and her company lies around her grave, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, who once spread terror in the land of the living.
Elam is there with all her hordes around her grave, all of them slain, fallen by the sword. They went down uncircumcised to the world below, those who once spread terror in the land of the living. Now they bear their disgrace with those who go down to the pit.
Among the slain they have made a bed for her, with all her hordes, their graves all around her, all of them uncircumcised, killed by the sword. For terror of them was spread in the land of the living, but now they bear their disgrace with those who go down to the pit; they are laid among the slain.
Meshech and Tubal are there with all their hordes, their graves all around them, all of them uncircumcised, killed by the sword, for they spread terror in the land of the living.
They do not lie with the fallen warriors of the uncircumcised, who went down to Sheol with their weapons of war, whose swords were placed under their heads and whose iniquities are on their bones, though the terror of these warriors was in the land of the living.
As for you, you will be broken among the uncircumcised and lie with those killed by the sword.
Edom is there, her kings and all her princes, who for all their might are laid with those killed by the sword. They lie with the uncircumcised, with those who go down to the pit.
All the princes of the north are there, and all the Sidonians, who went down with the slain in disgrace, despite the terror caused by their might. They lie uncircumcised with those killed by the sword and bear their disgrace with those who go down to the pit.
Pharaoh will see them and be comforted over all his hordes, Pharaoh and all his army, killed by the sword, declares Lord Yahweh.
For I spread my terror in the land of the living, but he will be laid among the uncircumcised, with those killed by the sword, Pharaoh and all his hordes, declares Lord Yahweh.”
